folks i was driving to work today and there was a terrible rattle out of the car its a 04 megane petrol, it sounded like when you drive on the motorway and if you drive on the yellow line its jagged and makes a bo boom sound or if you drive on a soft tyre that sort of sound, it seems to be coming from the back, would anyone have any idea what it might be???? its worrying me, thanks a million

    Loose wheel nut?

i dont think so? the whole car seems to rattle but the faster i go the less you would notice it? for example if i am crawling in traffic the car will shake but if im on the motorway its not as noticable due tot he speed??

Does it correspond to speed (increases in frequency with speed)?
If so it's probably something to do with the wheels.

I'd take it to a garage and let someone check it out.

"the whole car seems to rattle"

What exactly does that mean? Is there just a sound or are there vibrations?

yes i checked the nuts, yea it increased with speed and there are vibrations, very odd ive never experienced it before only close to it with say a soft wheel

I'd guess it's a wheel bearing!... Get it checked out before you part company:eek:

Have a look at the tyres. Quite possibly damaged or buckled tyre.

the tyres seem fine, id say it sounds like it could be the bearing

    Speaking from experience,

Id say its more than likely a fecked tire,

Eg. a bubble in the sidewall.. flatspot.. or unevenly worn tire giving up the ghost.

    A recepie for a blow-out i reckon.

Remove the offending wheel and inspect the tire, check for wear, wire protruding etc any signs of a defective tire

A wheel bearing would generally provide a loud grinding noise for a looong time before a wobble would develop

Jack up each corner individually and spin the wheels, also check for excessive play.
Probably not a great idea to keep driving it till you know what's causing it.

as above sounds like a tyre. the steel belt under the tread can fracture causing the tyre to go out of shape. that is why you feel it at low speed as you hit the hump in the tyre. it smothes out at speed because the tyre spends most of the time airborne after hitting the high spot.

Stick the spare wheel on to the corner that's giving bother.

If it stops its a wheel/tyre problem.

If not its a bearing/suspension problem

hey guys thanks a million for your help yesterday i went home and checked it out and all the nuts were loose! whoever put the tyre on must not have tightened them and they loosened over time, very dangerous...

    Bluddee Ell.
Over the years, I've suffered severe mockery for checking wheel nuts with a torque wrench. I'm off to print and frame this post from overthenest. Might even carry a copy in my wallet!

TBH, I was dealing with the very same symptoms a couple of weeks ago. ;)

Looks like the "rattle" was impact between studs and holes and / or between wheel and hub. I know that wheel studs are toughened (and maybe I'm being over-cautious) but it might be wise to remove and check the studs for damage and the holes for elongation.

PS: I've laminated that post from overthenest!

Yep, good point. This is what I had to remove from the car (new car to me, I wasn't aware of spacers being fitted). The wheel nuts were tight, but the inner spacer nuts loose.
The spacer is fecked and the wheel has some light damage too.]

I'll need to keep an eye on that wheel from now on, even without the spacer it may work loose again.

Check the studs/bolts/nuts and wheel mounting surface for damage.
