I have kept a few good quality bull calves with the intention of selling them in March. I was wondering how many kg of beef nuts a day would ye recommend giving them to have them in good condition in March. The silage they are eating is of medium quality and they are on 2kgs each beef nuts per day at moment. Thanks.

2kilos is enough in my opinion. i wouldn't be feeding beef nuts though, i'd aim for a high protein weanling ration. cant see the profit in throwing too much meal into animalls of that age.

I'd be inclined to say no more than 2kg as well. A lot depends on the quality of your silage too. Animals at that age are still growing so protein is important, a 16% ration would be good. No point in overfeeding them as a lot of lads buying in the Spring would rather buy cattle that aren't fat with meal as opposed to animals that have been fed a lot

Id go with that silage of medium quality and about 3 kg of an 18& protein nut till the end of jan then cut it back to a kg for 2 weeks and then completely off and then to grass by end of feb.If they get 4 to 6 weeks at grass then they should be inserious shape

How they are being overwintered too will have a bearing on their performance . Eg. Slats/ straw bed/ mats/ outdoor etc.

Thanks for the replies. I kept a ch bull last year off an aa cow, he was 490kg at 11 months, but he was on 4kg a day from christmas on, 5 kg for a few weeks before i sold him, with decent silage. Sold him to local cattle dealer, who told me I was not feeding him enough concentrate and was only maintaining him. He took him off silage and gave him concentrate ad lib straight away.
That's mainly why I wanted to get it right this year but he seems to be at odds with people here!
They'll be on slats but lying on rubber mats, and the beef nuts I'm feeding at the moment are 15% protein, so should I swap for a higher protein nut?

Typical cattle dealer talk down the animals they are buying.

    Why keep them?

Will not pay to keep them over the winter. More to be made by selling now.

You will need a big lift in price to pay for keeping them.

    Do the sums.

    Current weigh * €_.__ per kg =

    add costs

    Cost Silage
    Meal
    Dose
    Slurry
    Sundry
    etc

Consider weight gain, 0.5kgs per day, if any.

Total weight in spring * price per kg =

    Difference is profit/loss

I TB TESTED MY SPRING BORN BULLS AND INTEND SELLING THEM NOW RATHER THAN IN FEB AS I CANT SEE THEM NOT GAINING ANYMORE OTHER THAN THE WEIGHT THAT THEY PUT ON,IF IWAS ONLY GOING TO BE GETTING 700 EURO WITH THEIR WEIGHT I WOULD HOLD ONTO THEM BUT THEY SHOULD MAKE 1000 WITH THE WEIGHT SO NO POINT IN HOLDING ONTO THEM.

    No doubt about it.
    No need to shout it.
