    Hi Guys,
Complete Airsoft novice here. Im looking for advice on why my kids Airsoft gun is most likely giving trouble. Thanks to anyone in advance who takes the time to post a reply.
The Gun is a ASG M15 A4 Carbine and is a year and a half old. Hasnt seen heavy use, probably 20 sessions in that time. Never abused and cleaned and maintained as per the instructions.
Basically he went to play last saturday morning and the gun wouldnt fire. Battery was fully charged and tested in a different gun. The guy who runs the place offered to take a look at it and took the cover off the end of the grip that holds the motor in position to check inside. He told my kid his motor was burned out and gave him a cheap deal on a rental so he could play. (sound enough of him) He didnt put the cover back on however and that bit is now lost to make the situation worse. (kids, who'd have them)
Anyway tonite he gives me the gun and I take a look. I'm a technical person so first thing I do is take the motor out, connect the battery and lo and behold the motor works.
That leaves me thinking the the gear box is the problem. I push the motor back into position, ensuring it locks into place. I have to press it into position with my finger to get the gears to mesh......still doesnt fire although I can feel the motor kick.
I remove the motor and grip so I can get a better look at the gears. When the trigger is pulled I can get the main gear to move slightly with a gentle push of a screwdriver so I dont think the box is broken.
So the question is What is most likely wrong? Can it be fixed and is it worth it? Can a replacement part be fitted by me and likely cost?

Thanks for reading and anyone who offers help your advice is greatly appreciated!

with the motor turning and connected to a battery, try load the motor that is to say see if you can stop it by slowly pushing the spinning gear into a shoft bit of wood, if the motor chews the wood up its good, if the motor stops it may need to be replaced/reconditioned.

if this is good, remove the pistol grip by removing the 2 screws in the bottom (on the inside) you should be able to see a gear through the hole the motor goes into, you should be able to turn it with the aid of a screwdriver, keep turning (it should get harder to turn) until the gear gets easier to turn, just before it gets easier to turn you should of heard the piston slam forward into the forward position.

Cant test the motor just yet as the battery is charging. I can turn the big gear you referred about a quarter of a turn before it springs back. Basically it seems spring loaded in that it wants to push the screwdriver back against me until it slips because I cant push it further.
Sorry I just got it to fire! Dog sitting beside me nearly **** himself. Laughing my arse off here. LOL

if the gearbox does a full revolution and the piston slams forward this usually indicates the gearbox is ok, who ever was using the gun may just of gotten a gearbox lockup, happens a bit to ver2 gearbox's, especially when the battery is a bit low.

yes that happens you need to catch further back on the gear to get more of a turn, there is a anti reverse latch on the gear that acts as a rachet and will prevent the gear spinning back if you manage to get enough degrees of rotation on it.

Thanks again mate. Help is always appreciated. I did exactly as you said and got a longer turn on it. If the motor is ok it was most likely gearbox lock so?

Is it possible to get a replacement piece for the base of the handgrip? My kid left it down and it got lost he says. Im assuming it has a circular connection that presses the motor home?

Sorry for all the questions dude. Thanks again.

the motor base plates can be got in most retailers, maybe ring around. it will have the circular adjustment screw. assuming the gearbox turns and the motor is ok its likely the gun just got a lock up.

Cheers dude. Im going to get him to ring the place he played tomorrow and ask if anyone found it. Failing that he can pay for a new one himself.

    Thanks again.

Is this the part you are missing mate
    http://pix.ie/plinker/album/453721

I know it is off an M4 I'm not sure if they are the right screws for it but with a bit of filing it might fit your sons pistol grip. Pm me your postal address and I'll pop it up to you. Also if you have not opened the gearbox since the aeg was got it might need to be greased , reshimmed and if it has nylon bushings they might be worn from use causing lateral movement in the gears

Hi. Thanks a million for your help mate. Hard to tell if that part is exactly the one. Could be fit with a bit of adjustment maybe. If you dont mind going posting it that would be awesome. How can I pay you for it though?

As for the gearbox it has never been greased and its hard to tell if it has nylon bushings. Is it easy to get it out or open and do it myself or is it something someone more experienced should do?

    Thanks again for your help.
