    Hi guys,

My Sky+ box has gone tits up on me, now I rang Sky and they said I have to take the HD box, but I don't want an extra €15 a month onto my bill.

Is there anyway around this, all I want is a new or a refurbished box, nothing extra onto my bill.

    Cheers.

Isn't the €15 extra for the HD package? I have a friend that was given the HD box but has the standard package and doesn't pay any extra.

Yeah for the hd package, well that's what sky said to me, I think it's robbery, I might try eBay or something.

www.tvtrade.ie have refurbished boxes for sale. I've no connection to them, just bought a bit of them in the past and found them great.

i wouldnt buy from tvtrade. i dont like the sly way that they try to pretend that their prices are lower by quoting ex vat prices as the main headline price.

    try ebay or adverts

A lot of sites do that, it wouldnt bother me too much once it shows the plus vat price as well and doesnt try to just add it at the checkout. Also, tvtrade looked to me to be aimed at trade installers so i never noticed the vat thing too much. I see your point though, it may catch some people out.

I just think it's a disgrace that I don't want the HD channels but to get the box I still have to pay for them.

I'd ring back and clarify that because I don't think you do have to get the channels with the box. I know of people that have the HD box but not the HD channels and don't have to pay for the HD channels just because they have the box.

If they give you grief just say you'll stop paying them and switch to someone else. If you stopped paying for a month they'd be back onto you offering all sorts of deals.

You can get a standard box off em.but you have no live pause or record facility.

Dump Sky and get a Dreambox or any other Linux-based box.

tvtrade have a different login for trade customers who get a slightly better price than the ex vat price that the public can see.

so nobody gets these these ex vat prices that we see.

so you have to wonder why do tvrade display them ?

I rang them back, the box is way dearer without the HD channels so they try to rob me that way, unless I pay for the hd channels.

Cancel your subscription, you'll get the box for free a month later along with the high end packages free for 3 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭PAU

    Really?, That could work :)

book a service call............... sky do not supply white + box anymore. And will replace your box with a Refurbished HD box (prv4) refuse to pay the chargeof €100 tell them to send out engineer for free or cancel your account. they will put you through to cancelations who will do whatever it takes to keep your business.

OP, you don't have to pay the extra €15 a month if you don't want the HD Package. You don't have to get the HD package if you don't want it.

I dunno if you'll have to pay installation for the new box though.

We just got our new box in on Saturday (we still had the ould silver thing :o) and we're not paying anything extra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭PAU

Well I got a new one today, well a refurbished one for €80, HD box with way more storage than I had before, it's the job actually and I don't have to pay anymore onto my bill.

Many thanks for all your help guys.

I have an old Sky box and I would be interested in a new one that has anytime and on-demand.

Checked on the web and the are looking for 260 to replace the box.

I am thinking of doing this.

    1. Ring up and try to cancel.
    2. Will they give me a new box to stay
    3. Should I leave and join up later

Any ideas on what is the best plan.

    Cheers

I think Sky Ireland do a deal for existing customers who want a new HD box but not the subscription for €109 installed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,940 ✭✭✭dingding

    Hi Zorro,

Would you have a link to this, I can only find it at about 200 and 60 install.

Seemingly not always the case. I was to receive a call out today to upgrade my box to HD ready but no sign of the technician. I just rang them and I was told my appointment was cancelled by a person in Sky by accident and I would have a further 2 week wait after waiting 4 weeks already with limited channels working. I said it wasn't good enough as it was their error but they said there was nothing they could do and they were willing to cancel my subscription. It looks like they are not willing to do what ever it takes to keep your business!!!

I want to upgrade my skybox to a sky plus box. Will this cost extra in my monthly subscription? Or will it just be a just a one off payment for the box and the same monthly subscription?

It will be a once off payment and your monthly payments remain the same.

However try to get a free box from them. If you have been with them for several years there's every chance that you might get it free or maybe for a knocked down price.

You could also consider getting a box on Adverts.ie - they cost around 40 - 50 for a decent second hand box and up to 100 for a new one. If you go down this route you just need to ring Sky to have the card paired with the new box. Make sure you buy from an established seller with good history.

You probably know this anyhow but you need 2 cables from the dish to the box to make use of the Sky+ features.

Well my situation is this: I have been subscribed to sky since 2002. The original sky box, (not sky plus of course) was giving trouble in 2012 . My brother had a spare sky+ box after he upgraded his box to hd and gave me his spare box. We have been using it as a normal sky box ever since no sky +. In a conversation with friends recently they made out I would nearly be entitled to an upgrade to sky + box by now. I would get sky+ but I don't want to pay extra on my subscription as I believe that it's standard now? and Ive been a loyal customer over 12 years. Not sure what to do really. I'm willing to pay the once off upgrade cost but not an increase to my subscription

There will be definitely NO EXTRA CHARGE on your subscription.

Best advice I can give you is the same as before. Ring them and haggle as much as possible and if necessary tell them you want to cancel if they are not prepared to give you a free HD+ box together with getting an "engineer" (an installer in case Winston sees this) out to check the dish condition/alignment and fit the box.

Play hardball with them and be prepared to go ahead with cancelling. I cant guarantee it but if you didn't get them to agree to a new box and engineer call out (or box and call out at a discounted rate) and you proceeded with cancelling then I'm reasonable sure they will call you either before the cut off date or within a few days after it making you an offer to return. You have to give them 30 days notice anyhow so if you didn't want to lose the Sky at all even if only for a few days you can always ring again and change your mind before the 30 days is up.

Another option is to post what you did above over here in their "talk to" forum and most likely they will ask you to PM them your contact details and they will call you to discuss it. I see no reason why you wont get the box and visit at a discounted fee.....maybe 30 - 60 euro or possibly free.

Last but not least you can simply call and pay the one off charge but that's something I wouldn't do.

Ok thanks. The sky+ installer would probably insist I change my dish also as its the same one that's been there for the last 12 years and is rusty. It still works mostly ok
