04 Corsa Sounds like loud diesel

Hello i am in need people!
I have just bought an 04 opel corsa 1L petrol.
60000 miles on the clock. NCT til 2014.
And its sound like an old diesel engine, very loud when accelerating and on start up. Bought privately so no going back.
Everything i have read on the net so far has been pointing to the timing chain,
evidently a very common problem with this vehicle.

Anyone else experience this problem? Is a new timing chain the solution?
I am totally at a loss here, the seller said timing chain was replaced recently,
personally i dont believe that but, there ya go.

If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great.
I know its a 3 cylinder engine and there a meant to be noisy enough anyway but this seriously sounds like an old diesel van.

youve got a hole in your exhaust.

get down on the ground and listen, you can probably hear where its coming from and youll feel air puffing out with your hand.

did it sound bad when you paid for it?

There's your problem right there, a miserable car with a hateful engine. Why did you get it??? :(

Get a vid up, there are also a few threads on noisy corsas, the answer might be in one of them :)

Could by anything. My car currently is in need of a new belt tensioner for the drive belt ,and it sounds so bad I am not driving it at the moment until I get it done. So you are best off having some one look at it sooner rather than later. Was it noise there when you bought it?

The only way to check is to remove the rocker cover and check to see if there is slack in the chain. I would not say it would be difficult to done this on that engine. Have you tried contacting the previous owner? Always worth a try, and he may refund or partially refund.

Timing Chain or Coilpack i would say if the Car cuts out Randomly possible Camshaft Sensor

The car is driving well, no problems in that respect, no loss of power or anything. Its just the sound. Im gonna take it to my car guy this evening, he works in an opel garage so hopefully he will be able to pinpoint it. Thanks everyone for the replies and ill be back on to let all know how it went, hopefully it wont be too big a problem, because im bloody skint.

My guy thinks its tapets(?) or valve clearance that could be the issue, says the timing chain was done, so he will hopefully get to the bottom of it next week when he gets a proper look at it. Anyone able to shine a light on valves or tapets. im out of my depth now
