I am about to buy my first car . I have my theory test passed so just waiting to raise the funds without having to take out a loan for the Car or Insurance because I would like to pay them off all in one go . I'am also over the age of 25 aswell . One car that has Caught my eye is the Subaru Impreza TS 1.6 AWD which is no way a performance car at all . But the level of Insurance they are looking for is crucifying . I went and got two Quotes XS Direct Wanted € 3,299.45 and Axa wanted €3477.87 . Do you think I should go to a broker or would I be wasting my time trying to insure an Impreza TS 1.6 .

AonInsure beat all others for me this year; they seem eager for new business.

I used to insure my Imprezas (2.0 WRXs & 2.0 STis) with St. Paul via 123.ie. However St Paul/Travellers left the Irish motor-market this year and 123.ie were an administrative disaster.

Forget about trying to insure any Impreza (or any Japanese performance car) on a learners permit unless you have that kind of money to pay for it.

Well from what I know the car has 95 BHP and weighs the guts of 1.2 tonnes so I would hardly call it a performance vehicle .

I know its not a performance vehicle and you know its not a performance vehicle, but mention the word Impreza to an insurance company and alarm bells will immediately go off with them (doesnt matter which version). I had the same problem trying to insure a 1.6 Integra in my early 20s. There are certain cars that have a reputation with insurers, and trying to insure one is always going to be a painful experience irrespective of driving experience.

Youre on a learners permit with no experience and no NCB. There are very few insurers who will entertain the idea of insuring you on something like an Impreza, and those that do (the likes of XSDirect) will ask for stupid money and the policy will most likely have a massive excess (usually €3k+) and will offer the absolute bare minumum cover.

Youre better off passing your test and building up a few years clean driving and NCB in something smaller. This will put you in a better position to be able to get whatever you want and not expect to pay the earth for it.

You are 100% right , I have just managed to secure a Quote with XS on a 1.6 VTI Civic Coupe for €2,548.79 . The funniest thing is the fact that it is a performance car and the policy is for only 1000 excess on it ! That is mental some of these companies must pluck out figures from their h**** . What makes it funnier is the fact if I went and got a Civic Coupe VTI , I wonder wrap myself around a poll or go into a ditch quicker !

what the hell is the point in paying these kind of amounts for insurance, when the cars are anything but "performance cars"!

So what? 25 year old learner and his first car is an AWD Imprezza? I've consulted both hand puppets and they both agree that an Insurer would class that as high risk. You are high risk. Get something less "obvious" of and low risk for a few years...
