How many point would it take to affect your insurance.. I got 2 the other night for going 5 km over the limit , Some people have to me it will affect my insurance price wise but surely 2 can't be that bad?

Most policies state 0-2 points no difference.
You must inform your insurance company though.

As above - no difference but inform the insurance company.

It seems that before speed-camera-era in Ireland barely anyone was getting any pentaly points, while now it became quite popular and plenty of driver have at least a few on their account.
But what I see vast majority of those points are for speeding.

I never got a single penalty point in Ireland, even though I am speeding quite often. Only thing is I do it in safe environment on empty country roads where you meet a car once every half an hour.
When I drive towards some more urbanised regions, I encounter speed cameras, but I assume it would be very difficult to get any penalty points for anything else than being caught speeding.

Before I moved to Ireland, I lived in Poland, and I managed once to exceed limit of penalty points over one year. I had to sit the driving test again because of that.
The only difference is, that nearly none of those points were for speeding, but mostly for thing that for which no one would even dream in Ireland to be penalised with points.

is it just me or does an 80 euro fine and 2 points on your license not seem a bit steep for being slightly over the limit? specially nowadays.

Here you go - few examples.

    1. Lack of annual stamp confirming that my fire extingusher (which is obligatory car equipment there) was checked by authorised extinguishers dealer.

    2. Driving with my fog light on during the sunny day. (I got a new car and I must admit I mistaken the switches).

    3. For reversing into one way street in the housing estate against the traffic at the middle of the night without any cars around.

    4. For turning left out of supermarket parking while there was sign "right turn only". However this was in the middle of the night without any moving car withing a mile. (sign is there for people not to cause queues during rush hours traffic) Police was hidden in the shrubs.

    5. For changing lane through continuous white line before the junction. In short I was in some city and I got lost. When I reached the juntions on "right turn lane" I saw the sign showing that my direction was straight ahead. I indicated, and car which was on the other lane let me in. Police saw it and I got fined for crossing continuous white line.

There surely was some other ones, but I can't imagine anyone being fines for any of the above in Ireland.

Ah the famous disappearing lanes..yes we love them in ireland..Common enough in Romania too..but they will never let you in unless you gun it :D

I "sort of" have 5 points, and it didn't affect my insurance at all.

How do you "sort of" have points?

Possibly caught speeding somewhere other than where issued his/her driving license? irish license holder gets caught speeding in Engerland, they create a "shadow" UK license and apply the points to that, so if they ever changed to a UK license, the points would be activated. Still liable for the fine, but the points can't be applied to a license by a different EU state. Either that, or something not quite legal was implied that I won't mention.

I agree in principle that a scaled system of penalties would be more appropriate for things like speeding fines; it does seem a bit daft that someone doing 127 on a motorway gets the same penalty as someone who is caught doing 80 through a small village. Whether or not it would work though is questionable; I could see it being a sytem that would get abused...

Have a UK license, have 3 UK points which are on there and 2 irish ones which can't be applied to a UK license. Declared all 5 to my insurers though.

Do you have to declare UK points to an Irish insurer?

Has anyone recently got points on their licence while they were 5 km over the speed limit (in a town, at 55) if you are keeping up with traffic?

    Of course.

I changed the nature of the question. Legally, of course it would be the case. I have heard a few folks saying 'it's ok as long as you are keeping up with traffic'

2 penalty points shouldn't affect your premium, but I wonder will companies start loading customers with penalty points to make up for the recent change where men can't be charged more than women.

There are other more serious offences the latter could fall under though (reckless driving or whatever the official term is).

I'm sure plenty of people have got points recently for that. For example the M1 roadworks where the speed van likes to camp, the 80km/h zone. That would be like shooting fish in a barrel seeing as everyone seems to go over 80 in it.

I'm talking specifically about roads in built up areas though, (not main streets however) where the limit is 50kph.

    Why "specially nowadays"?

money is tight, I read in the paper recently that a huge % of people can't even afford basic maintenance costs for their cars, so just handing out 80 euro fines for being just 5 km over the limit is ridiculous.

My mate for example went through the same checkpoint with 2 months out of tax and 2 baldy front tyres. Yet he sailed through the checkpoint, btw i'm not sure I mentioned it but traffic corps were running this checkpoint.. yet i get fined and my mate is told to go on his way:mad:..

surely 2 baldy tyres is more dangerous than going 5km over the limit ffs

    It is.
As well as handing out 80 euro fine for being 50km over the limit is ridiculous.

All we need is graduated speeding fine system.

You shouldnt have been penalized for being 5km/h over the limit regardless; there is supposed to be a small allowance for the difference in calibration of speedos etc.

While I agree about the scaled approach to penalties for speeding, I dont agree that €80 is too low for a small offense. Make it any lower and its barely a deterent. A fine is supposed to sting the wallet; otherwise there would be no point to it!

I.ve heard of loads of people saying they've been fined and got points for being a "few" kms over the limit but none have ever been able to show any evidence of such!!
