My 2.5 year old dog will creep a mile after a running bird he is rock steady and if he comes by where a bird has just ran into the ditch he will lock up no problem but he is passing birds that are already in the ditch settled what's wrong with him?

Have never come across that breed :p

It's more a case of what's wrong with your training.
It's easy trail a bird that enters a ditch from the field.
He's obviously learned that's how he finds birds & not to search ditches. Keep putting him to the ditches & off the field.

Watch my last video. Look at the 2nd last clip. Notice I've read the dog was scenting a bird, I called him off & directed him down the ditch, then again back into the ditch, watching his behaviour & handling accordingly.
Since a pup I've been doing this. He now knows birds live in ditches as well as fields so searches in them also.

You need to help the dog learn
He also trusts me & takes commands
