Both insurance and the cost of a car can be achieved for 500 quid less each then what you were told. What year would you hope to buy ?

Hi, i'm the same age as you and have a full time job only diference is i'm male, i bought a very tidy 2001 Citroen Saxo for €1000 which had just been tested for a year and 2 months, the insurance was €1400 for third party fire and theft in my name on a provisional licence

ok well i have no clue about insurance as to what the policies mean, i must research that, i must get my theory done, and then find a reputable and reasonable driving instructor, ive been looking around and i seemed to have found one or two. i was just thinking while i have a job it may be an idea to purchase a small car, i dont know much about makes/models /: im not too bothered on the year as long as it gets me from a to b..........
another thing, when i have my theory done.. and get my provisional is it? does one HAVE to be accompnied all the time by another qualified driver because i havent got acess to one /:

i know i neeed to do my research on all this stuff so excuse my ignorance :)

Yes the current law is that you must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver who has held their license for two years or more at all times until you pass your driving test, and receive your driving license. The enforcement of that is debatable but it's black and white from a legal stand point.

€2k for the car, is probably more on the higher side of the scale rather than average for most people.

Common cars to look for would be Ford Fiesta 1.25L, Toyota Yaris 1.0L, Fiat Punto 1.2L

By law you're required to have third party insurance. This means that in the event of any accident, the third party (non-responsible victim) can be put back to the financial situation they were in prior to the accident. This could be repair to cars, replacement of cars, repair to property, etc.

Third party, fire and theft, includes the obligitory third party, and has the added benefits that you can now claim from your insurance if your car is stolen, or is involved in a fire.

Comprehensive insurance again covers the obligitory third party, but also allows claims to be made for things like damage to your own car by yourself.

It's important to note that any claims, third party or otherwise, will have an impact on insurance cost for future renewals and do effect NCB. The effect will be stated in your insurers policy documentation.

Also as ec18 has said, you are legally required to have a accompanying driver present at all times until you pass the test.

If thats the mk4 your referring to then I would advise against. Have looked at many myself and all that I seen were suffering badly with rust on the arches and sills. I know they are repairable but its not really worth the hassle. While a mechanically sound car they have cosmetically aged badly.

A car can cost as much or as little as you want. If you are minted, splash out. If you are skint, buy what you want / can afford.

The cost of the car will be a balancing act between:
Make, model, feature (including safety featue)
    V's
Age, milage, damage, imminent need of repair.

Look on various sites to get an idea of what you can afford:
Carsireland, carzone, cbg.ie and even gumtree and buy&sell.

Do also consider getting some of the lessons done before buying the car.

Rough and expensive. If they couldn't even bother making it look well for an ad, just imagine how it's been maintained. I wouldn't even bother looking at it.

oh okay i was going to have asked to knock it down a €100 or 2, thanks though, guess its easy to be fooled by the sounds, i dont plan on buying online (ie off donedeal) or something like that as the risks are too high.

Donedeal is not "buying online" it's simple an ad website.

It's the same as looking through your local paper, it's actually better since there's loads of picture (usually).

Still look on donedeal, it's better than anything else out there.

ok but you see my mum or father doesnt drive, which also gives me problems of no one to accompny me :(

well they said they'd take the 850, still dunno though, might be better to do the theory stuff firs and a few lessons which by that time ill have more money earned and may have spotted a better car for sale :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 202 ✭✭foreversky

If you have to ask this question, just get lessons first.

Cars are expensive. 2000 on the car 3/400 on tax, 1500 on insurance and that's before you've driven the thing 1 yard. You're already 4 grand in a hole. Granted if you spend less on a car then that will drop, but worth considering before rushing into something which will most likely sit idle in your drive.

yeah i agree, i guess im just anxious to get some sort of freedom, atm, im working around 4/5 days a week and earn a decent amount, i get lifts with a neighbour in but it can be 2 hours before work, i start at 8 but sometimes she goes in at 6, i shouldnt really complain and i try just to be happy as i know most dont even a job.

Really if i could get driving i could take my mum shopping (when ive a full license obbv) and just go anywhere (even just to town) because like i said no one else drives and its frustrating for me, and taxis are unrealistic.

sorry for sounding like a brat, just annoyed atm.

2 grand is reasonable enough but you could get a 2nd hand car a little cheaper than that. Insurance and tax probably be more expensive.
