It was 560 in 2011, but that might have changed with the bonus points for maths

Speaking of book vouchers, what value are the vouchers for people who got 1.1s?

Do you have to apply for it, or do they just notify you of it?

From memory, not very much. I was awarded the TSM one (even though technically I didn't do TSM) and I think it was 25 quid per subject, so if you got a first in both of your subjects you got 50 euro. I might depend on the subject though?

    No, you're notified automatically.

You do not have to apply for any of the book voucher prizes - Entrance Exhibitions, getting-a-First vouchers, Modern Language prizes and the like are all awarded automatically and you'll be notified in time (they often take their time with them though).

It's even less than that! It's €32 overall, so €16 per subject TSM. I got one for JF, but that was two years ago. I'm due another one this year but have heard nothing about it. The Calendar does mention something about "collecting in person" =/ but I think that's an old bit that they forgot to remove.

Has anyone heard about these yet? (The prizes for getting a I, not the Entrance Exhibitions).

I was inspired to go off and research this further as when I was awarded it I hadn't a notion of what it was, I just accepted the money gratefully :p But I was given more than 32 euro though. When I looked through the Calendar it turns out I was given the named history prize, which is a little more than the standard amount. You learn something new every day and all that...

From what I remember though I collected mine quite early in the year, so it's strange that they haven't notified you yet?

A guy in my year went asking about them two weeks ago or so, and I think he was told that the amount was still "under review" or something.

There's book vouchers for getting a first? I didn't know this.
I got a first but haven't gotten any vouchers :(

Back in my day.. 2000 it was 100 punts for the first two years and 545 was the point level - pre bonus points etc. Back then waterstones was HMV so you could use them in there too! I don't think I bought a single book with them!

Yeah, there is. It's only small, mind. I got one for my first year exams and am now due another one for my third year exams. They used to be sent out via post, but it looks like things are changing - on this page of website it says:
    http://www.tcd.ie/vpcao/administration/examinations/bookprizes-and-entranceexhibitions.php

First Class Book Prizes are administered by the Examinations Office and may be collected from the Examinations Office by the award holder in person in October. These prizes are issued in the form of book tokens and can be redeemed at Hodges Figgis and Co. Ltd. A First Class Book Prize may be awarded to candidates who obtain an overall first class honors grade at the Annual Examinations. These prizes are not awarded to Senior Sophister or Final-year students.
First Class Book Prizes are not included on prize publication sheets, and Directors of Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate) should ensure that qualified students are reminded to claim their prize.
** The value of Book Prizes is currently under review. **

So...are we getting book vouchers for getting a first? Are we supposed to go and ask for them, or wait to be notified about them, or get sent them in the post? I have some pricey textbooks I'd like to buy...

The last two years I got them in the post, no need to ask about them

    Brand new information to me!
So have we missed the deadline to collect them then? My department never told us about this and about a third of the class got a first

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 91 ✭✭EmmetOT

I got 580 and haven't heard a word about entrance exhibitions. I emailed the office at the start of the year about point requirements and they told me there'd been no word of changing it from 560, but if there was, that they'd update the information on the website. It hasn't been updated.

There is the little ceremony thing on the 19/20/21st of November. I saw it on the calendar. So they would want to be informing people pretty soon

My advice is go to the admissions office and kick up a fuss, it's the only way to stir them into action. I wouldn't have been invited to my own entrance exhibition ceremony as the system had the results of my first LC!

If they are reviewing it, i'd say it's because they must have way more people qualifying for it this year with the maths bonus points (if it's true that they're leaving the points at 560)

No, it's not the Entrance Exhibitions that are under review, it's the prixes for getting a First in the Annual Exams. This is thread is really confusing, every second person is talking about a different award...

The Entrance Exhibitions may have already been sent out, not sure. The vouchers for getting a First haven't...

Also, Anita Blow - a THIRD of your class got Firsts?! Feckin hell, that's crazy. Only two people in my class did!

I agree it's gotten confusing. All the different awards. I was talking about the entrance exhibition awards and just wondering has anybody heard about anybody who got them.

I don't think they have informed people yet. I know a few people who got well over 560 and they haven't heard anything about it yet. Hopefully they let us know soon because I really need a physiology book :pac:

I got 580, including bonus maths points :) The letter said it was being awarded for getting over 560 points so I assume nothing has changed :)

I asked about it today because I didn't get a letter yet either. Some letters won't be sent out until next week because there are 3 ceremonies next week but also 2 in January.

Wow. Must be some amount of people with 560+ this year! They've never had to do extra ones in January before! They seem to have sent them out very late this year, so I wouldn't worry just yet if they haven't contacted you. :)

Nope, still waiting :( It's only 16 or 32 euro (depending whether or not you're TSM), don't get too excited :P

haha I know! got 30 quid last year, that's half of a textbook! ;)

Haha fair enough. The vouchers, helpfully, are for a shop that doesn't do many/any foreign-language books, so they are of precisely no use to the language students who get em :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,263 ✭✭✭ride-the-spiral

Yeah there seems to be only one book for my course this semester that's actually worth buying, but I want this so I can use it on top of my entrance exhibition to splash out and get the full Feynman Lectures. :pac:
