How to get a job in IT without experience

I'm currently working full time and I'm refocusing myself towards a career in IT. I'm studying the CompTIA A+ and next year hope to go on and study a degree in computing and IT via part time distance learning.

I would like to get out of my current job and get started on the ladder in IT. I'm looking at Helpdesk support jobs but I have a problem in that I have very little experience and I would be quite rusty with IT support as I haven't done anything related in a good few years. I do have roughly 2 years experience working in an internet cafe between 2002 and 2004, doing virus scans, firewalls, OS installation and updating for all the machines, hardware repair and the like. But I'm thinking since it has been ten years recruiters and employers will see it as too long ago/irrelevant?

Im 27 and have experience as a business analyst and working in security and customer service aswell so have plenty of work experience in team orientated roles, customer facing roles and office roles. But I'm not sure a recruiter or company would really be interested in that for a helpdesk job seeing as I have very basic experience in IT itself and practically none in helpdesk.

I would be taking a fairly big drop in salary going helpdesk assuming I would start off earning 20-21k but I don't mind if I can climb the salary scale within a few years as I get more experience and go for more senior roles. Eventually I would like to get into Systems admin or be a network engineer, I guess my degree course will help me decide what I prefer.

Should the experience I have be sufficient to land a level 1/2 helpdesk job? Or how would I go about getting a job in IT without experience?
