I do nearly all my training with my dog on the difficult purple howth route.
It is the stable of my marathon training and I do basically 3 different ones on the route.

Ok you can start it anywhere on the loop. The easiest way is to start at the west pier in howth and head up the hill at balscadden bay, continue on till you reach a car park. There is a trail lane at the end of the car park and then you start to climb, you just follow the trail until you reach the road [not the trail path] that services the Bailey lighthouse. On that road is a black marker with the purple and red marker indicating to follow on the trail. The trail continues up and down until it reaches a beach. You go to end of the small beach and then follow the purple signs to start climbing again. You then reach a field adjacent to another lighthouse. Go to end of field and the immediately turn right onto a road. Its a strong climb for 200m and then keep to the right and you will reach a laneway [full of leaves] and at end of line join the road and climb 200m until you reach the main road that would bring you to summit of howth. Take a right and go onto foot path. Run 100m until you reach a gap [marked purple route] and start to follow it until you reach Deer Park Golf club, follow the white stones which are right of way and it brings you to another gap [this area is called bog of the frogs]. Follow the path until you reach a kind of Y junction. Take the stoney path to the right and then when you reach top follow path to the left for 200m and then you reach the marker again and start strong decent until you reach a housing estate. Follow the purple signs down and keep to the left in the estate. It will finally end at Howth Dart station and then just run back to the pier.

Click the Maps button at the top of the page
    Click Find a Map
Enter Raheny in the first search field, Dublin in the second
leave the other fields on default values
    click Search
it will ask you if you mean Dublin, Ireland. Say yes and it will list 8 routes tagged Raheny
