How far do you travel to your gym?

Out of curiosity? Im very much a convenience person and like to have the gym as close as possible. Ive been thinking of joining RAW but its a 20 minute drive or so traffic not included (probably same on a bike considering traffic going across the city). Would that be standard for most people?

    5 min walk for me

Raw is a 15-20 minute cycle for me, depending how hurried or lazy I'm feeling. There's several gyms much closer to home but they're shite.

    I'm about a 5 min cycle or a 15/20 min walk

I used to be a member of another gym which was on the way home from work, now I have to go home and then further on. There is another gym nearer and on the way to work but my new gym is way nicer so Id rather travel the extra bit

I'm at home and my gym is approx 5 metres from where I'm sitting. Also I have better equipment for strength training and more free weights than some commercial gyms.

If convenience is important and you have the space I'd very much recommend going down this route.

Mine is about 10 metres away. I built the shed too far down the garden.

Actually just bought a new house with a nice big back garden in it. however all money is being pumped into the house so wont have money to invest in a shed, nor Gym equipment to put into it!

If you're anything like meself, you'll only just be able to afford the bread & milk! :D

My gym's about a 4 minute drive and convenience is very important for me. Having said that its also a good all-round gym so no complaints either way.

Instead of a kitchen and bathroom I have a big gym. I literally eat and **** weights I'm that bad ass.

    2 miles away.
    It's handy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 267 ✭✭tattykitty

Mine's a fifteen-minute walk from my office, and an hour walk from my house...I generally walk everywhere so if I go to the gym on a Sunday (like I did today), I walk to the gym (6km), exercise for an hour, and then walk home (another 6km). And then collapse on the sofa in a feeble heap with a jar of crunchy peanut butter and a spoon. :p

2 minute walk from work, but nowhere near home. if i want to on the weekend I use a local one 5 minute walk away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,127 ✭✭✭✭Gael23

About a 10 minute walk away. There are cheaper and better ones around but not within walking distance.

    Down the shed.
    Best thing I ever did.

On the floor below my apartment is the pool,
And around the corner, <1 min walk, is the gym and also the mma/bjj gym.
I have it very handy right now

On the way home from work - about 1km from the office and 2km from my apartment.

Good weights are a sound investment as they will hold value. If you bought second hand and got a good deal you could make a profit. I bought 90% of my stuff new and reckon I could sell it on close to what I paid, since the price of steel has risen so much.
    20 minute drive
If you can figure out a value to put on your free time (and petrol etc) then you could work out how much it costs you per year. e.g. if you went 3 times a week that is 52x3x20minx2(return trip)=6240min or 104 hours. If you found some min wage job €8.65/hr sitting on your arse (i.e. no real stress like the time wasted in your car), then that's €900 per year.

Though if you cycled or lived closer & walked it could be counted as a warmup.

I spent €5,000 building my shed, but it's 25msq. I could have gone a lot smaller if all I wanted was weights room and a small bit of storage.
I use mine for a few other purposes aswell.
I also built an A roof and slated it to match the house, I could have saved a lot with a cheaper roof. One thing I didn't want to skimp on was the floor, 6 inches of concrete on top of 6 inches of compacted hardcore.
But I have a gym in my garden whenever I want it and I love it.

Arse-biscuits: yeah I picked up the bar from the lad in arklow last week. Happy out.

    Down the shed I have
    Pull up bar
    gym rings
    a secondhand bench
squat rack (made myself from 3x3 poles and concrete)
    weights 150kgs standard,
    3 barbells 5,6,7 footers
    Tricep bar
a barbell with car wheels (16kg each)
    and a treadmill

I've only really started lifting properly in the passed 5-6 months. I used to do a bit in the house but once I sorted the roof on my shed, I was able to move the gear I had down and I started to collect or build my nearly new gym

Both gyms I'm a member of are 5 minutes drive away. About a 20 minute walk either.

Currently a member of the ben dunne Carlisle gym, its about 15mins drive away which is fine. RAW is about 300m away from me so I might be making a change when membership runs out.

€5,000 to build and kit it out or just build?

Sounds great by the way, any pics?

If building a shed you might be able to incorporate some things in the design which can be used for training. In googled eyes pic you can see the wood going into concrete. If making a shed from scratch these could have been deep in the foundations, though it makes them unmovable. Also the wall could form a sturdy part of a 'cage'

    C_Kent_1.BMP

Your 'cage' could be holding up a loft area and/or be structurally holding the roof.

Exactly. My shed was there before i bought my house. If you were building a shed specifically as a gym you could really plan ahead with what you want.

About 5k to build. I had most of the kit already, I bought a rack, pull up bar, gym rings and sume bumper plates.

    That's fantastic! Well done.

All together, to build and fit out with rack, bars and plates etc how much did it cost? Ball park figure?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,629 ✭✭✭googled eyes

In the position it's in now there's a tiny wobble. I'm just looking for a piece of timber to fix to the wall and I'll secure the posts to it. Previously it was against the opposite wall which was easier to secure it to.

Your shed looks great ( very clean ;) ).

WHITE BOARD ! That's something I want. Phone apps are great but there's something good about seeing it written on the wall in front of you

Im about 20mins from my gym. Theres one closer but I dont like it all that much. Next would be UL which is better but the distance would be too far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,391 ✭✭✭Mysteriouschic

I walk it's about 20mins away walking. It used to be just 5/10 until I moved house.
There is another hotel gym much nearer but it's dearer plus I like the gym I'm already in don't want to move gyms.

Hard to say. I probably spent cloase to a grand between rack, bar, plates, chin up bar, kettlebells, whiteboard, radio.

In fairness, a shed half the size would be plenty for a gym. I did nearly all the work myself though and sourced second hand door and windows.
