Petrol price differences between stations

I notice how some petrol stations are at say €1.65.9 per litre while another may be at €1.61.9 per litre, within a stones throw of each other.

What is the reasoning behind this?

Without mentioning any names, there is one cheap station I know of that I wouldn't go near with your car, never mind my own. Customs seem to be regular visitors to it so draw your own conclusions.

However, stations who haven't attracted that type of attention (at least that I know of) still have cheaper petrol prices than most others.

Is it a difference in petrol quality, a difference in contract price or what? And how would a motorist find out?

I ask, as for the difference in price I'd rather use a better quality petrol - if indeed it exists :o

Genuine question, I'm not looking for any controversy or rows with anyone :)
