Hanging a punch bag from a power cage

Has anyone ever done it, how did you get on?

I am thinking about doing it. The cage that I have is quite wide and weighs about 350 pounds as a bare cage. I am thinking of getting a punch bag (weight would be between 80 and 110 pounds) and hanging it from the chin up bar at the front or the bar at the back. I am only 5 ft 9 so I don't need to hang the bag very high, still i think I'd have to have the chains quite short to have the bag at the correct height.

Would the cage be able to cope with this?

It's not a ideal way to mount a bag as movement around it is restricted. However other ways of mounting a bag in a house can be unsatisfactory - rafters can shake, brackets can pull out of walls etc. I used to have a bag hung from a rafter in the garage but stopped using it due to the shaking and possibility of roof damage.

See below pic for what someone else has done.. I reckon my cage is both wider and heavier than the Powertec in ths pic.

I had a small bag hanging off my cage for a while tis grand but very limited for moving around it. I'ver progressed to a 5ft bag now and its wall mounted...its better but still limited to movement around it.

Thanks drifter, did your cage shake much when hitting the bag? I wonder if the bag was heavier and/or was secured at the bottom would there be less shaking

I am not too concerned about limited movement around the bag as I plan to stand more or less in the same spot and wallop the crap out of the bag with punch combos. My main concern is getting the bag at the right height and not wrecking my cage.

nope. i have the things for storing weight on the rear of my cage so there was like 200+ kg on it and it never moved...

    what cage have you?

I've nearly abandoned this idea now, the main issue is height of the cage. It's a TDS cage and is abut 82 inches high. The punch bags I've been looking at are 24, 36 or 48 inches high and have the logo around 12-18 inches from the top of the bag.

So for a 48 inch bag:

    Height of mount: 82 inches
Chains etc: at least 12 inches
Distance from top of bag to logo: 18 inches

SO the logo is around 52 inches from the floor

My height is around 70 inches and my eye level is around 66 inches but the part of the bag I want to be hitting is 52 inches. Not what I want. Even if I use a 24 inch bag and shorten the chains as much as I can I don't think it'll work well.

When I had a punch bag a few years ago I used a joist in the garage but have since read up a bit and I realise that this was unsuitable and I'm lucky I didn't damage the roof.

Now I'm thinking about the wall - putting bolts all the way through it with a plates on the inside and outside and attaching a bar and hook to the inside plate. I will need to get help from with this though as I don't have the skills and I may still have difficulty getting the bag high enough.

Anyone got a comment on any of this?

The logo doesn't necessarily need to be at eye level. It might be correct height for some bags but not others. It really depends on the bag. (Heavy vrs tear drop vrs long)

One guide I read suggested a point 1/3 the way down the bag at shoulder height. So above/below this represents head/body shots. So say shoulders are 60" high, a 48" bag would be 16" down and need 6" of chain. A 36" bag needs 10".

A 48" bag is quite big for a cage but 36 should work fine. I'd go for it.

Thanks for that Mellor. I will have another think about the 36 inch bags. I'm looking at some on:

Actually would you or anyone else have any thoughts on a Body snatcher bag or a Wrecking ball bag

The body snatcher is 24 inches high and I presume the wrecking ball is around the same. These bags are relatively heavy for their size at 30-35 kg.

PS I do not need to be able to kick the bag - punches only.
