We got the same door, and I forgot to ask for the door lock to be changed when ordering. You can get a knob that just turns on the inside. I think all rental houses have to have these locks by law. I'm going to get my locks changed when I finally move in.

We have a similar door and the hubby put door jammers on the inside. They are very cheap but extremely effective - when I come in the house I flip one up and the door can't be opened from the outside (even with a key) they're also great if you have small children who are curious.

This is a common mistake when ordering a new door, and its down to lazyness on the part of the Door Co not to explain the difference.

What you have is called lever/lever where the door can be opened from the outside, usually on a back door, in case you go out to the garden and forget keys, ( why would you bring keys if hanging out the washing)

What you need on a front door is lever/pad, where the Pad on the outside does not open the door, so can only be opened with a key or from the inside.

They have different locking mechanism, so I suggest you ring the door Co and ask for the lock/handels to be changed, tell them the handels you have should only be fitted as standard to a back door, or on request to a front door.

I had that kind of front door before...go out to the car/bin/front gate, the front door closes...guess what? You're locked out.

Sister in law had the same kind of lock...she brought her twin babies inside the house, went back out to the car to get her handbag, the door closed behind her. She's locked out, the babies are locked in.

My door can be opened from outside...security chain on the inside has solved any problems.

It's a lifestyle issue, which a door Co should take 30 seconds to explain.

I have seen elderly people freak, '' is the front door locked'' and as you point out people with small kids, getting locked out.

So if ordering a new door, take a few minutes to work out what is best for your family

there is no cost differential, but hassle, if you get the wrong combination

All as you need to get is a thumb turn put on the inside where the key goes and it acts like a key it can be installed in a couple of minutes
