RP Guide to the Jumps 2012-2013

Bought the book again this year. Same format as before, stable reports from Henderson, Hobbs, King, Longsdon, McCain, Nicholls, JJ O ‘Neill & finally Pipe. No point in me picking out what I thought was relevant as regards horses to look out for, but bar some bad luck, it should be obvious to all that Henderson is going to take over the mantle for the next few years as top dog while Nicholls re-groups. The rest don’t have the ammo/owners to create the firepower needed, except perhaps McCain, or so the guide suggests anyway. That, along with stats on each stable, covers about 60 pages. 2-3 pages of picks from the Racing Post journalists of their horses to follow (that covers about 20 pages of reading). Then there’s short profiles on the 400 horses for this yr’s competition. The write ups on each horse seem to be getting shorter each year or so it seems to me.

The main thing I noted in the guide this year is a change to the Competition format. For those who play,
    • the entry cost has dropped to £5 per line.
    • there are now 15 bonus races, with the Chelt Int’l hurdle in Dec added, along with the Aintree hurdle. Bonuses for these races are the same (25 for win, 12 for 2nd)
    • Bonus points are also, as always, awarded according to the SP tote price, capped at 50 points
    • there is no longer a bonus window (no adding bonus horses in February 2012). That kinda helps me in a way as I generally miss this deadline!
    • and last, but certainly not least, you get to nominate 1 “star horse” in each line. The star horse gets double all bonus points. So while Sprinter Sacre may mop up plenty of races, his sp would likely be evs, so not much in the way of bonus potential there......?

Sorry, forgot one - Competition starts Nov 16th but you can enter up to Nov 30th.
What do you make of the new rules?

They did too, not sure how I missed that. That knocks 50k off the fund, along with the 10k festival prize. They defo should have kept those prizes going. Even if you were miles behind, you always had a chance of snatching a monthly prize. No mention of these being dropped in their editorial, which is a little naughty. I guess the number of entries has dropped or else Fred is taking a larger rake?
