Aertel gone?

I noticed last night that my Aertel reception is not working. Before the Digital switch it worked on my RTÉ1 channel and it had been working there after the changeover. Last night when I pressed the usual buttons the Aertel screen came up but when I pressed the page number it was frozen on 2 symbols and 2 page numbers (200 and 300) at the bottom of the screen and indicated it was searching for the page. Nothing else came on the screen and after waiting for about a minute I just left the text pages and went back to the TV channel. I tried on RTÉ2, TV3, TG4 and RTÉ +1 and got the same result.

Then I attempted a re-run on RTÉ1 a few times but with the same outcome each time. My Saorview otherwise is fine with Irish and UK free-to-air channels all working.

Have I missed some information I might have overlooked when all the publicity was about the TV channels?

Is it the "old" Aertel text you have lost? This was switched off last weekend on RTE1. Text still available on TV3 and TG4.

Is your TV a Saorview approved model? If it is, it should display the new style text service.

List of Saorview approved products here. Certain non-approved TV's may also display the new text.

    I have text on 3, 3e, TG4 on a non Saroview-approved STB.

The old RTÉ text is gone - replaced by the new 'digital text'.

Thanks for the replies. How do I access the new text please, or is it supposed to work the same as the previous system? Have TG4 and TV3 text as before.

You will require a receiver with MHEG-5 software to decode the new Aertel. All Saorview approved receivers will do this. Non-approved receivers may or may not, depends on the product.

What receiver do you have at the moment?

To Johnboy - Sorry I should have said "I" have TG4 and TV3 text.

Unfortunately I haven't a clue what receiver I have. It is, apparently, built in to a Philips TV I bought earlier this year. Am using this in office and do not have internet at home so cannot tell you even the model.

Thank you for your replies. Much appreciated.

Were you told at the time of sale that it wouldn't get MHEG 5 digital text? If not it was mis sold and should be returned as not suitable for use in Ireland. the law is on your side.

My Android Aertel app doesn't work any more either but Aertel is still accessible from RTE.ie?

Gone on just the Saorview platform.

Thanks, winston 1. I am a luddite particularly at I T. I know I was told about MHEG 5 and, I think, MPEG something but I cannot say I was misinformed or mis-sold a useless TV.

List of Philips TV's that are Saorview approved here. Check to see if the model number of your TV is there.

Gone on just the Saorview platform.

Basically instead of treating everyone equally whether they have Sky ,UPC or can watch the Saorview service the only people they have screwed from reading Aertel are the people who have an uncertified box ( and given that some major retailers have been selling such box's there may be a fair number of them about )

My Dad has a Panasonic tx-l32x20l Digital TV which is connected just to an aerial.
He has all the digital channels but has lost Aertel on RTE1 & Network 2.
From checking the site below http://www.saorview.ie/product/panasonic-3/ it seems the TV is not Saorview approved so I guess that's why he is not getting the new Aertel?

If this is the case is there a workaround bar buying a Saorview box?

Nope, unless you count Aertel on the web:

Or a Sky box. The Teletext works even in UK via Other channels. No Sub, no Audio or video, but teletext. Only via SCART or RF even on HD boxes. No Teletext on HDMI

If he bought the Panachronic in Ireland within the last two years he should take it back as not fit for purpose. The law is on his side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 296 ✭✭goalie2

Winston_1, yes it was bought in January of last year. How is the law on our side?

RTÉ2 HD on Saorview has never carried the traditional Aertel service, only Digital Aertel since it launched almost 2 years ago.

If it was not pointed out to him that it is not Saorview compatible, which it isn't, he was mis sold it as it is not suitable for use in Ireland. The Sale of goods Act says that products must be fit for the purpose for which they are sold, in this case for use in Ireland.

Ya your right, only had it on RTE1, network 2 just showed a blank page for teletext.

So it definitely looks like I need to get a saorview box for my Dad to be able to get the new aertel?

NO. What you need to do is take the set back under the Sale of Goods Act, not suitable for use in Ireland. You don't need the packing materials. Get a refund and spend it on a suitable TV.

Return you TV to factory settings. It is one of the menu options. At startup it will ask you to select a country. Choose UK instead of Ireland.

Rescan your channels. Now press the text button on RTE1. The text should work.

(Some TV's depend on UK being selected in order to turn on the MHEG engine to enable digital teletext as it is turned off in the Irish country profile setting of the software)

This TV does not support digital teletext (MHEG) functions.

Many thanks for that. I will try it when time available, maybe tonight.

To STB. I tried that last night and it worked, so very much obliged to you. Now have digital Aertel on RTÉ 1. It looks completely different to old style but I'm sure we will all get used to it.

All I have to worry about now is tomorrow's move from Channel 45 to 23 or vice versa, and hope that works.

Ok, got a spare set top box from a friend for the father - its a HD Digital Terrestial Set Top BoX SV-201 and does all the digital channels grand but when I choose teletext from the remote it shows teletext language as off and I cannot change it to on

I checked the setup of the Set top box and there is nothing in there to turn it on eve though the manual says you can turn it on there. Is this because of the tv cant receive the new text?

The SV-201 is non approved just like the TV I told you to return under your legal rights which you seem disinclined to do.
The teletext the SV-201 looks for is the old Aertel which of course it won't find. For MHEG5 digital text you need an approved Saorview box or TV.

I still urge to reject TV the set to the supplying dealer. It was mis sold as it is not suitable for use in Ireland.

Thanks Winston_1, set top box was free from a friend so cost nothing. Will bring tv back to shop.

Brian Gearghty of Saorview was on C103 radio this morning (Monday) about Saorview reception problems of listeners in Co. Cork, - the (EBU/WST) teletext disappearing was also brought up by listeners and the reply was that the old text was switched off when the clocks went back, the problem is they have non-approved product if they have no Aertel and speak to the retailer!

should be repeated sometime after 11PM tonight
