Attic Tank Overflow

Our attic water tank overflows slightly when the heating is on. The overflow pipe takes care of it and it drips out the side of the house.

My theory is, when the heating is on and the water in the cylinder heats and expands it expands up the feed pipe to the attic and raises the level in the attic just enough to overflow... opinions on this? would the heated water expand enough for this to happen?

The solution I guess is to reduce the level the ball cock allows the tank to fill? As it it fills within a few mm of the overflow pipe.

Do you have a heating expansion tank (small tank)? if so it might be over filled so when the heated water expands it has no where to go except out the overflow. If this is the case check the tank when the system is cold bale out some water and adjust the ball valve accordingly.

This was my first theory, I half emptied the expansion tank and tied the ball cock up to stop it refilling... but the overflow still happens, so I know it is the main water tank.

Bit of a puzzle there alright I cant say i've ever seen that before you could drain down the cold water tank a little and bend down the the arm of the ball valve a little but be careful they can very easily snap.

Just bend the ballcock bar a tad and that'll fix it.had the same problem myself and that done the trick.

(turns out nossle split so couldnt turn off) i ran outside to find the mains valve (none inside ffs) pavement frozen with half inch of ice. couldnt remember where it was, scraping fast as i could with a radiator bracket. found it but what a balls

That is my fear. I might shut of the feed and half drain the tank before attempting it...
