Mondeo Issues...

    Hi all,

I'm having a few issues with a 2001 Mondeo that I bought recently. The spec is: Ford Modeo Zetec, 2ltr DI, DuraTorq engine.

The first problem is, when starting from cold, the idle is very rough with plenty of white/ grey smoke from the exhaust. The smoke smells like unburned fuel.
A quick drive down the road and back, and the idle is perfect with no smoke at all. There is no water in the oil or slime round the filler cap. My first thought was either a Glow Plug issue, or a fuelling/ injector issue, but now not so sure.
    Any ideas?

The second issue is problems with erratic steering. Only usually happens at lower speeds when driving on uneven roads. Its hard to explain, but, its like the steering pulls you to the left or right every time there is a bump in the road, or a slight camber. I'm thinking maybe track rod ends? Or could it be something more serious?

Thanks in advance for any and all comments.

The first thing I'd be doing on a Mondeo with regards to the starting issue/smoke would be a leakdown test as these engines are prone to piston ring issues which would cause the symptoms you describe.

As for the steering, it could be as simple as poor quality tyres or wheel alignment but it could also be a suspension issue. If you can, jack up the car and shake the wheels to see if you can feel any play anywhere.

On a 2.0TDDI? Or are you thinking of the petrol models?

    Was thinking the same thing.
Tried it again this morning, it was slow enough to start. When it did start, it was like it wasn't getting enough fuel, but as soon as I took it out the yard literally only 100 meters or so, it was running perfectly. No smoke and idling grand.

Sounds like it could be a valve stem oil seal issue.

A friend of mine seems to have the same issue. He left the car sittting outside the house for about 3 hours the other day. When he started it up had a rough idle and lots of grey smoke for about a minute or two then all of a sudden like hitting a switch it cleared and ran smooth. It's a 01 zetec 2 lt turbodiesel. Pre-common rail with 200k miles on it. He says it runs sweet apart from that.

Sounds exactly the same issue. Going to test all the easy stuff tomorrow if I can get some garage space.

Is this not a turbo problem?

Already had a look at the turbo on mine and everything looks to be OK. Moving freely and no excess oil etc...

Doubt it. It does sound a bit like the turbo leaking but you'd have smoke all the time and performance issues. My theory is valve stem seals on the exhaust side being a bit leaky. Oil is slowly being burnt off as the leak is not in the cylinders.

Would the rough idle be caused by all this smoke sticking in the cat?

The smoke on mine smelt like unburned fuel, which is why I first thought it could be a dodgy glow plug. Going to test them tomorrow anyway, and if its not that, I'll have to dig deeper.

Thanks for all the comments so far BTW, appreciate it.

I'm thinking I should be reading the first line of the post properly before answering.:o

    Quick update...

Went routing round the engine at the weekend to try sort the start up issues. Found one or 2 split air hoses as well as a tiny hole in the fuel line coming from the filter. I did an oil and filter service while I had the space, and found water in the fuel filter! :O

Anyway, after replacing the hoses and doing the service, all seems well for the moment.
The steering issue turned out to be a bust shock and dodgy droplinks.
