That director was our last hope....
    No...there is another...

Delighted he's handing over control. This make me quite cautiously optimistic :)

Same here. I'm not easily shocked but feckin hell...this has come out of absolutely nowhere! Just seeing some more updates on Twitter...

'From Disney conference call. "Our plan is to release a new Star Wars film every 2-3 years."

Best thing about this news is the episode of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon finds out.
I'm ANGRY about this! Now we'll get "Darth Mickey" and "Goofy Skywalker"
Maybe Joss whedon will take over! :D

This is fairly huge news.

Normally you'd think taking a franchise away from its creator could only be a bad thing, but in this case.....

So where does the story go from after Return of Jedi, the Empire Strikes Back...Again!

Here's hoping they release the original, untouched trilogy on Blu-Ray sometime soon.

I wonder what this means for the likes of Robot Chicken. Lucas, typically, turned a blind eye and even encouraged others to parody and draw inspiration from his creation. Will Disney treat their new IP the same way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭thegreengoblin

Can't wait to hear what the films will be about. It will surely have to be something totally new, they can't just film the Thrawn trilogy can they? As brilliant as those books are, I want to be going into the cinema knowing that I will be seeing an original Star Wars story. Maybe they will just ignore the Expanded Universe though and do their own thing. Exciting times ahead!

    It is
    many years after
    the events of Episode VI.
    Balance has been brought to
the Force and the galaxy is once
again at peace. Under the leadership
Luke Skywalker the Jedi temple has been
rebuilt and new padawans are studying the ways
of the force. However, in a deep corner of space, on a
remote planet, a new evil is lurking. A new evil with dark secrets

It's funny. I haven't felt this optimistic about Star Wars since before Episode I. I think that says it all about the damage GL has done to his own series since 1999.

This could be brilliant for Star Wars fans as long as Johnny Depp is not a Jedi.........

Dont be silly. It wouldnt work when they do the Marvel / Star Wars crossover.

This could be great. In fairness it couldn't be worse than episode one!

True but we will have battles where "Hulk smash puny Jedi" and characters like Cap'n Jack "Thor" Skywalker, savvy.

    Episode 7!! I'm so excited!!!
I'm glad Lucas handed over control, it had to happen eventually. I really believe it's the right move and seriously hope I'm not wrong. Looking forward to hearing what the films will be about- at least they've the books to use as a guideline- they can't go too far off course.
I wonder does this mean the tv show is truely dead in the water (more so) or will Disney consider it

Worst news ive ever heard, its disgusting to hear disney just declare they are gonna churn out a movie every2-3 years, especially when they will all very likely be terrible

In all honesty though how are they gonna do this?
Theres really only 3 options avilable in my opinion

    1. Tap the Expanded Universe of books and comics, for instance Timothy Zahns trilogy. However this would require a complete recasting of the original characters.
    2. Throw the EU canon out the window and start again, but this would also require a complete recasting.
    3. Work around the EU with new characters and stories but keeping to the canon of major events.

IMHO they should copy the example of the CG animated Clone Wars. By that I mean retain the "feel" of Star Wars but don't be a total slave to the principle characters.

I'd honestly have more hope for a new Disney film with all new characters than I wold for one that just plays it safe and spends 2 hours nodding & winking to old characters we've seen before. The only requirement of a new film that it feels like Star Wars. After that they can go anywhere they like with it.

Does this mean that, instead of the Fox fanfare at the start of the movies, we're going to have the Disney castle...? :(

Yippee swiftly followed by Ah Cr*p was my first reaction, after a little time thinking about it I can't say I've moved to far from my original reaction.

Yeah that really threw me when I went to see the Clone Wars in the cinema and instead of the fanfare it was the warner bros logo!

as a massive star wars fan (rebel alliance tattoo and all :D )I'm actually kinda excited by this.

Disney have proven with their Marvel take over that they can deliver (The Avengers proof positive of this), and the thought of a Star Wars movie 1)That isn't directed by George Lucas 2) That isn't written by George Lucas 3) That's entrusted into the hands of a competent film maker and 4) Isn't shot entirely on greenscreen is an exciting prospect.

I do have a few concerns - ideally I'd like 7,8 and 9 to be a new story with no connection to the first 6 - I'd be terrified they'd recast the original trilogy actors and pick up just after Return of the Jedi with the "Continuing Adventures of Han, Leia and Luke". Although if they went down that route I'd love to see them tackle the Thrawn Trilogy, but that won't happen.

That and the comments from Disney that after the next trilogy there'll be another movie "every two years". Expect lots of low rate CG movies based on Yoda then.

However, the news has excited me (imagine Pixar tackling a Star Wars story!). Can't wait to see how it all pans out.

Last night Facebook and twitter were alive with the news. People I hadn't spoken to in 4 years were messaging me telling me the news.

Well what was the future of Star Wars with LucasFilm? Lego have done more for the franchise in the last few years than it has. LucasFilm seemed happy to just license the brand to other companies to do things with.

Disney have bought this to make it a cash cow.

All the films will be PG-rated, CG ruined "adventure films" to try and appeal to the largest market as possible.

I dont have any faith that they will do anything to make these films great.

Look at what they did to John Carter

    I don't.

What was the most successful movie this year so far? The Avengers. Who owns it? Disney. I'm quietly confident.

Check your facts mate, it was produced by Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures.

Disney were one of the many distributors. They had no creative control/input.

The production credit is given to Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures but it is solely owned by Disney.

I am confident a Star Wars film could be made in a similar manner.

Dunno John Carter and the black hole were pretty woeful, their attempts at scifi have actually been worse than the phantom menace.
