Sound card and opinion on DJing with just a laptop

    Hey everyone.
I'm considering just using my laptop to DJ for a while. I think it would be okay for now to just map my keys and download the free version of Virtual DJ while I learn the basics of digi DJing, and then I might fork out on Traktor and some proper gear when I know I can make a more informed choice. Did many of ye start out like this, or do any of ye DJ like this all the time?

Also I'm looking for a soundcard and am wondering if any of ye would have any suggestions.

    Cheers!

    Honestly, something like this:

would be miles better than the keyboard on your laptop, and it has a soundcard built in.
Didn't you have a thread asking about 200 euro headphones? Get a cheaper or second hand pair of headphones and a cheap as chips controller and you'll be much better off.

Alright thanks. And yeah actually I have already decided on a cheaper set of headphones for the time being.

Oh don't worry I'm well aware! Was just wondering if many people went down this route, whether it would be a good way to start off etc

Think I'll be spending a good while messing around with my software and actually getting the whole beat matching down before I'd try mapping keys or anything. :o

You need a controller of some sort or it's not really djing. Sorry.

Alright it was just a thought! :) I've heard of people doing it so I was just curious.

Now I'm trying to decide between the Numark Mixtrack Pro and the Hercules RMX controllers.

    Thanks again lads!

The rmx is a great machine for its current price. I used one as my main controller for couple of years. I bought one recently for backup to my mc6000 for e100.

+1 for the RMX. For the money it's a good solid controller with a very decent soundcard built in. I think I paid over €300 for mine from Thomann years ago. For the current price it's a steal.

I've had an RMX for a few years now and it's absolutely bulletproof reliable. As said above you'll get a used one in good nick for 100 quid or so, probably as good as you'll get for that kind of money, and unlike most of the Numark stuff it doesn't look like a toy.
