Ran out of petrol today

Going up a hill, to work. Car conked, luckily managed to get it to side of road and wasn't blocking anybody's drive. I was haunted that my girlfriend's parents house was around the corner, otherwise it was a long walk to the garage...

The annoying thing was I have drive my car with the needle lower than where it was (it was pretty much at bottom to be fair though), and I was planning on stopping in garage on way to work to get petrol and breakfast.

    Grr...

The hill was probably the cause alright - uphill, so the petrol moved to the back of the car, presumably away from the drain at the front (?)

Why do people drive that low?

It's so bad for the car

    It's just lazy and stupid

So driving back home again should be OK?

No, but reversing up the hill to the petrol station could have worked.

Maybe because they haven't got the money and need to drive.

    Is it really? How?

Calling someone lazy and stupid because their car ran out of fuel is a little over the top.

It would be great to be perfect like you.

  • Site Banned Posts: 957 ✭✭✭leeomurchu

It's not bad for the car you'll just go through fuel filters a bit more often as any dirt etc settles at the bottom of the tank.

Ran that low because the light came on Saturday, I didn't have the car out on Sunday until Sunday night (late, dropping people home), and I was in a mad rush yesterday to and from work. I had planned on getting petrol yesterday evening after work but got stuck late and needed to get home. It was an oversight, not laziness or stupid.

As for being on the hill, I was saying it was annoying as if it was downhill I could have freewheeled into a parking spot or something.

Haunted = lucky (I am indeed from Cork).

Just a tip incase it happens again y ou can drive the car off to the side of the road on the power of the starter motor as long as you have a decent battery. You won't go a long distance but should be enough to get you out of the way. :D

I agree, if it's just an oversight fair enough, it happens to to anyone, but if you're driving with the light on for ages and no even able to put a tenner worth of petrol into the car then maybe that person should consider if they should have a car at all.

€10 worth of petrol is at least enough to get to and from work. If that's an issue, cycle or use a bus/train/something else.

€10 would give about 50 miles of driving which is 80km in my car anyway.

Plenty to get to and from work. :)

Not taking into account sitting in traffic or hills. Try sitting in traffic for an hour starting and stopping and going uphill too and see if a tenner lasts. Its only 6 litres at 165.9 per litre. It also depends on the engine size of the car, bigger the engine the more fuel it uses.

Well I often go to college at 9am in the morning and come home at 5pm and my mpg doesn't change that often. Hovers around 35mpg I think last time I checked. Obviously the engine size etc changes things, I'm giving my 1.6 Alfa as an example. ;)

Absolutely no excuse for runningout of fuel in a first world country. If you can't afford to keep a reasonable amount in the tank then you can't afford to run a car. Get rid of it.

Jaysus, motors can be a surly forum these days.

On topic, I once had to walk two miles to a petrol station after running out.
I'd also split my trousers in the arse that day in work. The ultimate walk of shame.

All of it my own fault, yes.

We've all played orange light roulette, i played it myself last nite. It came on just as i got a job into town from Malahide, i then had to shoot back to pick up regulars, dropped them off and got a job off the radio to from Clontarf to Stillorgan. Ya never feel more alive than when yer about to run out of juice. Made it though!

    This.

I personally hate when my tank go less then half. Petrol arrow was just little bit above half tank today, so on the way home I toped it up to full again. Now I can drive my car up until half tank again. I know if I will have emergency I always have at least half tank in my car.

OP it's not healthy to let modern cars run out of petrol too. Just keep it roped up m8.

Your starter motor is designed to turn over the engine in a short burst, not to shift 1-2 tonnes of steel any distance. Drive it on the starter and prepare to put a new one in: You'll burn it out.

50 miles is about 80km in most cars ;)

I've run out of petrol twice in 20+ years driving. Both times I was on test drives; the knobends in the garages weren't arsed keeping a basic amount of petrol in them.

I know that, just converting it to KM anyway.

As for running that low, you have to be careful.

In a petrol car, running out of petrol, can damage your catalyst. Meaning, it's more expensive than just keeping a 10'er of petrol in her at a minimum.

It'll haunt the person doing it at the next NCT, when the emissions are way off and a new cat has to be sourced.

    /M

going against the grain here, I thought that it was proven in most modern cars, having very little petrol left in the tank does no damage whatsoever these days. could be wrong but that is what im sure I have read several times recently

Allergic is a bad thing, e.g. I'm allergic to going into work.

Surprised so many people have questioned my intelligence, I was just venting is all, I am well aware that it's my fault, I thought i had enough in the tank to make it the 4 miles from my house to work...

Ah well, live and learn I guess...

No, in my 10 years of driving, I have NEVER EVER ran out of petrol!!!

Not only is it lazy and stupid, it's dangerous!

I stopped on the M50 near Bray to pick up two women who were walking along the hard shoulder with a petrol can, I gave them a lift to and from the petrol station and asked how come they had a Jerry can in the car.. The answer was: "Sure it happens to us all the time!"

    I mean, come on!

The funnier thing is, after putting in €4.53 into the car, I followed them off the motorway, PAST the petrol station, and turned into their estate!

I would have loved to see them back on the motorway the next morning after running out again

    Idiots!

In fairness with the best will in the world it can happen to anyone. Ive never ran out of petrol either but I came damn close one day; was going to play a match out in the wilds of Meath and didnt realise just how far from a petrol station I was. Ended up driving around on the fumes trying to find one. I guess I just got to used to living in a town where you are never more than a couple of minutes from a 24 hour station :p
