Nicest voice on Irish radio?

I tend to define "nice" in radio terms by people who speak softly and calmly. I'm automatically turned off by all affected accents and avoid commercial format radio à la  FM104, 98FM entirely - and people who are too brash and loud like Marty Whelan.

Listening to Philip King, whom I first knew of through this song, on South Wind Blows on RTÉ Radio 1 last night and there was general agreement in the room that he has a great voice on him, very soft and appropriate for night-time radio.

John Kelly, too, has a melodious, dulcet voice that's easy on the ear.

John Creedon's euphonious tones are also very easy to listen to, even though I wouldn't be mad about his music.

Trish Taylor on Lyric is also easy on the ear and very elegant. In my view, most of the nice, calm voices (Byrne & Whelan obviously excepted) are on LyricFM. While on RnaG Eibhlín Ní Chonghaile on Iris Aniar is just right for the morning, while Cian Ó Ciobháin on An Taobh Tuathal has a nice sound to him in the evening.

Who on radio has the nicest voice in your view?

Tom Dunne has a nice soothing voice as does Orla Barry

RTE: Gavin Jennings & Rachel English on Morning Ireland, Michael Murphy on the news, Andy O'Mahony & Sean Rocks for Arts and Lilian Smyth on Late Date. Rick O'Shea is about the best of an extremely grating lot over at 2FM. Niall Carroll has the perfect voice for Lyric I reckon. Philip King I find can get a little irritating - he seems to think he's Bob Harris at times.

Otherwise, KC on TodayFM, Fionn Davenport on Newstalk & Ken O'Sullivan on LMFM.

Thank you. You nailed it perfectly, and have given me the right point of reference for when the south wind blows (and I'm not a great Bob Harris fan either).

Shocked that no-one has mentioned Brek (Brenda O'Donoghue) yet :D

Seriously though, Trish Taylor gets my vote.

Such a pity Lyric can't (or won't for some strange reason!) dump that jabbering faux-Wogan idiot Whelan and give her the regular morning slot. She's very easy on the ear on the sadly rare occasions she gets to fill in for El Prat.

Tom Dunne has a nice soothing voice . . .

Yeah, very soothing indeed, but he also has the worst diction on the planet, & what about all that forced/fake laughter

Sam Smyth or Rachel English would be my faves . . .

Yeah, it's always a pleasant surprise when he's on leave. Trish Taylor wins this one hands down.

I really can't think of a single voice that I could describe as genuinely nice. Not like say James Naughtie or Brian Perkins on BBC radio 4 who are aural gold.

I think she's left now, but Michelle Doherty was my favourite: the way she pronounces 'Hile-ing Bells' does it for me every time.:D I also find Ken Early's drawl quite mellifluous.

Mike Molony has excellent mellifluous pipes. Very rare on Irish radio that anyone has what would, traditionally, be described as a 'good radio voice'.

    A.

Since I've started getting up earlier in the morning, I quite like Shay Byrne on Risin Time. Not sure what it is, but it's enjoyable at 6 or so in the morning....

But while in my head Shay and I would be great drinking buddies, for some reason I think he'd be a dissapointment in the sack. Not quite sure how I know this from just his voice, but there you go.....

Val Joyce, who is no longer on radio unfortunately. His colleague Lillian Smyth from the very agreeable Late Date programme almost fills the void.

For me it'd be Tom Dunne. The worst for me has to be Sam Smyth. Maybe the most annoying accent I've ever come across.

    em, eh, em....

I wouldn't say mellifluous, but Seán is definitely one of the better/ more naturally intelligent and witty presenters on radio and at least by his incessant em, eh, em he reduces the number of times he says you know like, you know and that's like you know a break from like you know every other radio presenter like.

although she only does stand in every once in a while, the nicest voice on irish radio has to be Aoibheann Ní Shuilleabháin.

best on radio anywhere is Huey Morgan on bbc 6 music

I have thought this for AGES now. He's covering TRL this week and I remember him covering said show for about 3 weeks a month ago and I immediately noticed the drop in standard once regular presenter Becki Miller came back. I know SPIN's primary concern isn't how amazing the presenters are but for me, he is the best on the station and all he is given is Sunday Breakfast?! Excuse my radio nerdiness but his timing for links is PERFECT and the way he uses the jingles and beds makes the show sound really slickly produced and makes for exciting listening. His voice is also really nice on the ear and his chats with listeners are entertaining and funny, confirmed by my chat on the phone with him last night.

If it was up to me, I would add Becki to the breakfast show and either keep/get rid off Tracy Clifford and give Paul the permanent gig on TRL. Sorted. :)

Well listening to Ray Foley's podcast a few day's ago it sounds like Dara Quilty may be dropping in for 7pm - 9pm in Today FM so we might see Becki move to Zoo Crew & Paul to TRL? Not sure though and Dara Quilty reports haven't been confirmed either.

I'd be surprised if this were true. The Zoo Crew is SPIN's most popular show and Brian & Dara work well together. Also, isn't Today FM geared towards an older demographic? I couldn't see Ray D'Arcy and Dara Quilty presenting on the same station!
I did see Dara say on Twitter a few days ago that it was about time that The Lock In with Dara Quilty was reprised. Could he bring it back on another station? IMO, there is a huge gap in the market for a national station aimed at the 15-34 demographic.
If the Dara rumours were true, though, Becki has done the show with Brian before and they were great together and then Paul would surely be given TRL. I would like to see this happen......

It may be SPIN's most popular show but Ray Foley has dropped from National to Dublin also. Plus that would be a massive jump for Dara to go from Dublin to National. To be honest I can see it happening I think there is great room for Dara Quilty on Today FM and it would bring in the younger audience for Today FM it might not be geared towards them but there's always room for change.

Regarding your national station aimed at 15-34 I completely agree but wasn't 2FM supposed to be the national youth station at one stage.

I think there's room for a national SPIN or iRadio/Beat/104.

I think SPIN could easily do a Capital and go national if the money is there.
I suppose Quilty would jump at the chance to present on a national and Today FM do play music which would attract a younger audience (especially during Foley's show).
Regarding 2FM, that station is on its' knees. It doesn't know who its demographic is and its presenters, for the most part, aren't good enough. It needs a schedule overhaul and a review of its music policy and the purpose of its shows. Who would actually listen to it? Younger people interested in new, popular music listen to SPIN, BBC Radio 1 or Capital. People intetested in news listen to Newstalk or RTE Radio 1. Then there is Today FM for young to middle-aged(ish) people into a variety of talk and music and there is Nova, Phantom for their respective audiences. 2FM badly needs an identity.

If 2FM decided to go as the national youth station & adapted a SPIN like format overhauled their imaging fixed it...purchased RCS and went from there. It would only be a matter of time before the figures went up! As for the ancient presenters on it that seriously needs to be addressed.
