Cycling from Limerick along the N21

    Hey all,

I'm testing the ground to see if it's plausible for me to enjoy a bit of a long distance cycle/very short tour from where I live in Nenagh to Killarney. I've cycled into the centre of Limerick very often but I've never gone along the N21. Has anyone experience of this road? is it safe? Busy? Good space on the edges of the road? I'll probably take a camera along for the ride and hopefully I'll be able to update you all here if it's successful! It seems it's around the 140k mark which is well within what I can cycle, but I'll probably detour etc. Anyways, any help anyone?

I have done it four times - twice in either direction.

City to Adare via Patrickswell is fine.
Feisty narrow road out of Adare for about 3km.

From there there is a hard shoulder all the way to Castleisland.
Very well surfaced straight road. Even driving it I have often seen cyclists use it.

Last time I did it was Dec 28 & Mar 16 in past 12 months. Both days were poor in terms of weather. Despite that I never felt unsafe on the road.

From Castleisland to Killarney is a proper pain in the backside - feisty narrow road in a lot of places.
It can be avoided by heading to Currow and cycling up a short but steep hill along a very very quiet secondary road. Take L2033 and head straight onto the L7006. Direction Reavaun and Inchycullane. It's a lovely route actually.

Tbh Limerick to Killarney is exceedingly boring - I did it as training.
A much nice route from Neenagh would be Newport, Oola, Killmallock, Charleville, Kanturk, Scartaglin, Killarney.

Brilliant. I wasn't sure what was safe and what wasn't so I was just planning on sticking with the primary road and branching off. Cheers :D

The road is good until leaving Newcastle West where is climbs up to the barnagh tunnel. the first 1/2 is quite narrow then opens to the usual road with a hard shoulder.

As a slight detour take the old Barna road that cuts out this bad bit of road. it rejoins the main road a few miles later.

Note they are currently resurfacing parts of the road just before Adare and there are rolling road works south of Adare. Our €100 going to resurface roads that are perfectly good already.
