    Hi,
I have a sony minidisc player 3 or 4 years old. Still in great condition but want to upgrade my music player to a digital music recorder by Sony or Olympus. Where would be the best place to sell/trade in my Sony Minidisc player? I wonder should I try asking sony shop for a trade in against their digital music recorder?

sony shop won't give a you a trade-in. minidiscs have been superseded by digital music players largely. you might get 20 euro on ebay for it if you're lucky.

Well it's only a few years old so i'd be hoping to get more than 20 euro on it seen as I paid over 400 euro for it!

it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it - not what you'd like to get!
there is no real use for minidiscs anymore... most people have mp3 players in their phones that can hold 500 full albums... no need for a minidisc.
I had a quick look on ebay and they don't sell for much these days. surprised that you bought a minidisc instead of a mp3 player / recorder as recently as a fiew years ago. haven't seen one in the shops myself for about 7 or 8 years.

Well I needed a high quality recording player for the music I play. The sony model I have is the latest on the sony website so it's younger than 7-8 years old!

fair enough if it's a high-end model and still in demand then maybe there is a market but Sony don't appear to be making them anymore - http://news.slashdot.org/story/11/07/09/150211/sony-announces-end-for-minidisc-walkman so that would indicate that people don't need them anymore...
.... ebay would probably get you the best price.
you can very high quality music repro in digital music using formats like "flac".

You'd be lucky to get €10 or €20 for it nowadays.

You missing the point. These are not used simply as a MP3, player though they can be used for that, as they are much better SQ than your average iPod having better Amp and DAC. Some Audiophile sites would value for that alone. Something can support Flac and still have poor SQ.

However the high end HiMD were/are popular for live recording, especially among musicians.

But you are correct it that most people wouldn't know the value of these things, and would only offer a pittance. So you it might time to find a buyer offering any decent money to buy one. Might have some chance advertising it with musical equipment where musicians would see it.

If you have a top end one it might actually be sought by the right people.

I did appreciate the recording side. you can get perfectly good digital recorders for less than 100 us dollars now, offering many advantages over media like minidiscs. for live music the microphone quality will be more important that the recording aspect....

That might depend on how you define "perfectly good". From memory the RH1 has some extra features for recording that most run of the mill recorders don't. Ditto the quality of the recording. I can't remember exactly its been a long time since the RH1 was around.

The point is these things are rare and I've heard of people still getting a couple of hundred dollars if not more for them when they sell them. But 99% of people don't want them. You need to find the 1% who do.

But veidhleadoir if you want to sell it for 20 as has been suggested by others, I'll give you 20 for it!

Media students are the 1% that want these. They're great for audio recording and the colleges still use them. I graduated from a media school four years ago and these things were very in demand and still quite expensive given the age of the technology.

That's your most likely market OP, I wouldn't expect to get more than €80 for it though and it'd want to be in good nick.

well if that's the one that he has then looks like it's probably worth 250 to 500 euro depending on condition, if boxed etc... still don't get what they go for that much. even on minidisc wikipedia entry it says that pro's have moved to solid state recorders

    Wow.

I had a Sony MZ-NH700 back in the day. Always wanted a RH1. Peats had the RH1 for 299 or something like that up on their website till about 2yrs ago.

only thing I can see is that the rh1 allows transfer direct to pc so people with old minidisc recordings can convert to mp3 etc with that feature. prior models didn't allow that.

I think you are missing the attraction of the watch like gadgetry here. Also the SQ of all MD/HiMD was far better than most if not all MP3 players back then, and probably most of them today. But I think people loved them as cool devices most of all. I think there was a big fashion thing in Japan collecting different disc's and different editions of the Players.

I started buying them when I realised the Mp3 player I had at the time, and the Portable CD player sounded poor in comparison. People dumped MD/HiMD for a song for the early MP3 players, and I picked up a good few of them up very cheap 2nd hand.

But eventually the MP3 players improved and it just got much easier to move music to a MP3 than use the MD's. I sold all mine.
