Death by emergency tax...

    Hi,

    I have a totally self inflicted problem with emergency tax.

    Long story short, I lost my p45 right when I started with my present employer over a year ago. It's a really large company and because I'm unbelievably shy and was so embarrassed, I panicked and have never done anything about it, just wanting to fly under the radar.
    It's come to a point where I'm taxed more than what I'm coming out with. And my family have recently run into money troubles. To top it off I just found out I'm pregnant. I've been ok going along when it was just me but now there are others to think about I need to try to sort this out.

    I'm not even expecting any refunds of taxes I've already paid but my question is, where do I start? I'm clueless. All I know is that a p45 is useless now. Have I banjaxed myself for good? Going about it now, am I no longer entitled to tax credits and will I be basically emergency taxed forevermore?
    I'm obviously more embarrassed going back to my employer at this stage - mortified even talking about it now because I know it's a ridiculous situation to have got myself in.

    I'd appreciate some advice...please.

    Ring the PAYE helpline on tuesday and request that your tax credits and standard rate band be allocated to your new employer. Revenue will send your tax info to your payroll dept.

    Emergency tax exists to get you and or your employer to sort your tax affairs out with Revenue. Link below explains more.

    To sort yourself out now, get your employers paye registered number (7 didgits with a letter on the end), the date you started and how often paid. Ring the paye 1890 number with that info and your PPS.
    A certificate of tax credits will then issue to your employer to allow them to tax you correctly. If you have overpaid tax during 2012 they will refund it in your wages.

    What about the emergency tax the OP would have paid in 2011? Would they have to claim that back through their PAYE anytime? or will that be refunded through their wages too?

    For last year the OP needs to claim

    For this year it will be automatically refunded once the Revenue are told the employers number and they forward on the certificate to payroll

    Right, this is pretty ridiculous OP. Firstly, you are entitled to every bit of excess tax you've paid refunded back to you. Secondly, requests for P45s/P60s are very reasonable standard requests and you shouldn't be shy about asking for them.

    On Monday phone PAYE and ask that all your tax credits be allocated to your current employer. They will send you a new tax credit cert and also a copy to your new employer. No harm you giving your new employer a copy too and telling them the story. They will be well used to this. This will stop you paying emergency tax.

    For the tax you've already paid, you need to explain this to revenue and ask for a P21 balancing statement for last year, then next January ask for a P21 balancing statement for this year (2012). You will be refunded every bit of excess tax you've paid. It's nothing to do with your employer and they won't even know you've gotten a refund. Sometimes companies will refund you excess tax themselves when you get credits sorted but you'll get it back one way or the other.

    Please make sure you sort it, paying emergency tax like you are is madness...
