I cant pick a laptop out at all, I was looking at the Samsung 7 series chronos nice i7 1gb dedicated graphics on a nvidia 640, 6gb ram bla bla bla. Went to play with one today in a store and the trackpad was terrible the reviews reflected this.

I cant seem to find a laptop what has portability, a good battery life when surfing the web and some grunt when needed. Any ideas

Configure your own at PC Specialist? 15" or 17" Optimus IV with full HD display, Quad Core i7, 8 GB RAM, GTX 660M, 500 GB HDD for less than a grand (incl. 3 yr warranty).

I was looking there but I can see anything on battery life? I need a few hours at least being in around college and never having a working plug insight.

    There's a tab saying Detailed Specification. ;)

That'd be the 15.6" Optimus IV. I suppose 6 hrs is only possible if you don't play around with that GTX 660M too much. ;)

Of course that 77 Whr battery contributes to the weight of 2.7 kg.

Maker specs and real world usage are very different :D Whats the difference between the Vortex III and the optimus?? Bar the graphics card? My optimus build comes in at £966.00 inc VAT, the vortex comes in at £1,223.00 inc VAT. Same setup just the optimus has an extra 4GB of ram. Think for my needs the optimus will do, dont play on gmaing much and the 660 card should do me.

Some more bells 'n' whistles with the Vortex series, I suppose... premium Onkyo speakers, fingerprint scanner, backlit keyboard, etc.

996 Sterling is quite steep. ;)

The configuration I mentioned above would be £758 (£776 with a 128 GB SSD)

If you're thinking about a 7,200 rpm drive, remember, there will be a tax on the battery life, they're also noisier and cause more vibration.

Well i made some changes lol Added a 250 SSD and took out the HDD, afetr using an SSD for so long I cant go back. Added better wireless card to make use of my network plus threw in a Blu-ray drive because im cool :D Those bring it up to that price. I noticed you added the glossy instead of the matt display? Is there a difference between the too I can stand glare so I was thinking the matt??

Doesnt seem like to bad a deal for what im getting I suppose.

    Wise choice.

On that matter, the difference between the basic 250 GB HDD and the 240 GB Intel SSD will buy you a 256 GB Samsung 830 Series SSD at computeruniverse.net. IMHO the better choice and it will you you with a spare 250 GB HDD for use as external storage in a 2.5" caddy.

Nope, it was just the first choice... and I prefer matte myself. ;)

Wouldn't bother with the bluray drive on windows you've pretty well no choice but to buy additional software in order to play them properly, because the bluray consortium charges for codec usage making them unavailable to free players like VLC (there are some not exactly legal workarounds but they aren't all that good or reliable either and not for mentioning here)

Right lads thanks for both suggestions. Going to get the cheap 250 hdd and throw in the samsung drive like advised. As for blu ray Im not sure, going to see how much extra it is over the normal drive if its cheap might aswell throw it in since having the option to burn disks for backups would be handy. Will order in next few hours and report back when I have it :D:D:D

156 yoyos here, 162 here (better check the costs for delivery to Ireland, CU might be cheaper than HV).
