    I thought this was a piss-take... that's hilarious.

They're beyond satire at this stage. The Onion would be proud of that one.

My OH also asked why is he standing on a wheel in the below image? Can't be good for it.

Why is he wearing a traffic cone on his head and a helmet under his arm?

That is like shooting yourself in the foot, then reloading.

Some of the (few!) trim ex-pro riders that hang around race finishes have an awful hungry look about them (Hinault, I'm thinking of you, Roche looks well fed already by comparison), and even a hapless little wooden boy probably has more eating on him than most current pro riders. Poor old Pinocchio will be a nervous paranoid wreck in no time.

Didn't he get eaten by a whale once, or was that just a cover-up of an incident involving an off-season Jan Ullrich?

    Quality post.

It's actually a pretty good mascot. Pinocchio is transparent, always optimistic, magical, and altruistic. So ya, it's not actually that silly of an idea when we think about it.

I had a deeper look into the site and found this little gem

It represents Verbruggen still pulling strings at the UCI

The level of convoluted nonsense that the Italian organisers come out with for their races is hilarious. Check this out.....

Just waiting for the merchandising page to be up and running - I'll definitely be in for one of the Pinocchio jerseys

Hold on a sec. Pinocchio was an inanimate piece of wood brought to life by some magic dust right? Surely he stands for the benefits of doping rather than anything else :D
