Why isn't Dundalk the capital of Ireland?

That's a good question that needs to be answered, and answered quickly.

Could someone please explain to me why Dundalk isn't the capital place of Ireland? ...It's a bit of a disgrace to be honest!

I wouldn't mind if someone had the decency to tell me what Dublin has, that Dundalk hasn't got...?

I'm sorry, but I get a bit too frustrated sometimes when I think of things like this. The main question is driving me mad.

I've heard of people from Cork wondering why Cork isn't Ireland's capital...but this is a first.

By page two this will descend into city vs country, junkies vs culchies etc.
    Give it a rest.

Oh & Dundalk seems to produce people that resemble the missing link between man & monkey.

I knew someone was going to mention that. I highly doubt it's worse than any Dublin accent.

Just stay away from the gypos wandering down Clanbrassil St. or Bridge St. during the day and it's a nicer place than most towns i've been in this country.

    Seriously?
Dublin is more central. It gives easy access to the fertile midlands. It's close to Britain and has a good natural harbour. So it developed as the main city.

Dundalk is a great place to live, everywhere has it's knackers/scumbags; not everywhere has great scenery, great restaurants, lot's of history, nice pubs, fairly good infrastructure (port(Greenore), m1, train, broadband is getting there, schools, DKIT, unfortunately the hospital is gone now). Of course I'm biased because I grew up here, but when we were buying a house at the start of this year my wife picked Dundalk over Dublin as somewhere to live and she's from just outside the city, went to school and college and worked in the city.

If there should be a new capital of Ireland, it should be at the geographical centre which I believe is near Athlone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,085 ✭✭✭purplepanda

Never mind being the capital it's not even in the proper province!! :D

Should be part of Ulster

It must be a frustrating and possibly embarrassing experience being the subordinate of a person who is mentally retarded.
