Do All AH threads follow a set pattern

    First of all I am not complaining this is merely an observation because I like browsing AF from time to time and I enjoy the wide variation of topics that get discussed. However do people feel that sometimes when the odd serious thread pops up that it gets ruined by the same posting formula that is applied to nearly every new topic in AH. For those of you who aren't aware of what this is it would follow something like this;

    OP posts
    attempted funny one liner
    attempted funny one liner
    attempted funny one liner
    attempted funny one liner
    Actual funny post
    attempted funny one liner
    attempted funny one liner
    Serious reply to OP
attempted funny one liner at expense of serious post
attempted funny one liner at expense of serious post etc

No doubt this thread will either descend into the same or just disappear off the front page because nobody will care. Im not sure how to fix this - maybe remove the "thanks" function from AH?

TL;DR I like it here but it would be nice if the more serious threads were left alone from all our inspiring comedians ;)

Yes absolutely they do. It's very annoying. Generally the first post is critical, if it has some sense, then the thread might have a small chance of being somewhat useful and worth reading. If the first post is something stupid, trying to be funny (rarely successful) the thread is almost destined to failure.

Personally I think it's a real shame that the forum that's by far the most popular, on the biggest message board in the country, is 99% full of absolute utter junk. You'd think an effort would be made to restrict this to the forums dedicated to nonsense like the thunderdome - but sadly not.

It's because of After Hours that all this junk doesn't, for the most part, bleed into the rest of the site. Be glad it's here.

    You forgot the:
    • Where did I say...?
    • I never said...
    • Read my post...ffs
...and usually followed by badly written and spelt accusations of idiocy and / or badly written and spelt claims of impeccability.
I find this strange because I rarely, if ever, meet anyone in the flesh as aggressive, as nasty or as eager to take offence as the two-finger warriors on AH. What happens when the normal, pleasant, open-minded Jekyll (or is it Mitty) signs onto boards? And, after their atomic-scale, hair-splitting rants, do they morph back to normal before re-joining family and society? God, I hope so!
As they say in AH, "gets popcorn".

Neither do a lot of After Hours posters if some of the attempted one liners are taken in to account.

Whenever a new thread appears there are people almost falling over themselves in an attempt to be the first person to post a funny reply.

So the trend of threads recently is complaining about the quality of posts in AH?

It all started with that thinly veiled thread and now people are looking at AH critically. There is nothing to critique in this forum. It can be mundane, nonsensical and over the top, just as much as it can be inciteful. The best thing about AH is both set of extremes exist here. They may not co-exist, but they never will with people nit picking over it all the time.

Happens nearly every thread, some people seem to define themselves by it. Usually better off skipping the first couple of pages to avoid most of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,973 ✭✭✭SafeSurfer

    So whats the pattern?

Is the next post supposed to be a funny one liner, an actually funny post or a serious response to the original serious response to the op?

Did you mention the Grammar Nazis at all? I lost focus there for a minute, I was racking my brain for a funny one liner, but I can never come up with one of those, they're beneath me, really. I think people should take AH much more seriously and consider what they are going to post for much longer, not just post the first innanity that springs to mind. Very immature, IMOHO(whatever that stands for)

There's also a lot of bullying in threads which is completely overlooked by the mods. People form gangs and attack the one poster or the OP in some cases.

    This.

Now Liz will await 10 'thanks', to which was a very unhelpful and may be deemed "smart" comment. Obviously I would report the comments.

    I said they get overlooked.

I didn't post that for thanks at all. How do you know they are overlooked? Perhaps the mods have seen them and decided there is no case for action. PM a mod if you genuinely think someone is being bullied on a thread and they're not responding to it.

Just an obscure thought: the word 'pedant', when read, conjures thoughts of a paedophile going for a walk!

    Noun or adjective?

I think AH threads follow the same pattern as grief for a loved one who has died:
    • denial: OP starts a thread, saying one thing but really meaning something else. Won't admit it to himself, never mind anyone else. For example, anything about life outside Dublin is really about Travellers;
    • anger: well, duh, loike.
    • bargaining: OP tries to negotiate his way out of the mess, pleading ignorance of the not-so-subtle bigotry in the original post.
    • depression: the world's gone to hell, hasn't it? People are just stupid, and why am I wasting my time on this fecking forum?
    • acceptance: yeah, it's just another AH Thread. There'll be another one along in a minute.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

    Op is right.
While After Hours is a good forum because you can talk about alot of different things. Some people go over board with the "witty comments" - hey nothing wrong with that in a joke thread :) But .. making witty comments about someone horrifically dying?
