Bought this in Tesco for my mam €39. Works perfect. Great picture. Simple to set up and use and before you ask does it do teletext(can't believe people still use this) i've no idea. Mam wanted to get Saorview on old 15" portable. Simple and inexpensive and im sure can be bought for cheaper elsewhere but add in delivery and im sure prices will work out the same.

Can record to USb also plays movie files MKV etc.

    Some pictures added.

Quality of pics not great sorry.

It doesn't work perfectly. It's an extremely budget generic receiver that they are making a huge profit on and does not supply all the Saorview services.

Keep the receipt. I'm curious how many of these will last the minimum 2 years required by SOGA.

    It's not a good purchase.

Tesco could have ordered sufficient stock of 100% compatible boxes over a year ago for delivery the end of August 2012 but they didn't.

Tesco and Dunnes, Harvey Norman, Dairygold and others prefer to source cheap generic partly compatible products at the last moment and sell them with a big margin.

It's a National disgrace the lies (often by omission) told by Retailers and inaction of Consumer agency over the last two to three years.

They can't claim something is for Irish TV or Saorview compatible without specifications to back that up. The only easily obtainable proof is Saorview Certification.

The Retailers and Wholesalers have chosen to order late and "dump" over priced and often poorly made products on the Irish Market.

Tesco even stocking "Freeview" gear they didn't stock 6 months ago which can't work at all.

I think at the price 39.99 if it lasts 2 years then great. Not all older users 60+ will not have any use for teletext etc. it has all channels tuned in perfectly and signal/ picture is great. As much a we all love to spend €200 plus on a box for an old telly its not going to happen. As i said before, yes it may be cheaper online but factor in delivery and all that.

For anyone wanting fancy EPG Teletext off and spend bigger money absolutly but for someone who wants to watch TV this if Great.

Every saorview box/combi box has issues but im happy with what i've got for little money. I'm sure if i bought a ferguson or other make i would also be told they have issues.

BTW Tesco don't exist to make a loss.

Last week Tesco themselves were doing HD receivers for €25, delivered.

Even if the BT1 1AA postcode trick didn't work , parcel motel would only add a few euro to that (and IIRC you get the first few drops free)

    €40 for a non-approved receiver isn't much of a bargain
you are saving a tenner on the best priced approved box and spending €15 more than the lowest priced non-approved box

    *me hugs €6 USB tuner*

Tesco Outlet on eBay last week were selling one of their Technika Freeview HD boxes for £20 including shipping. They had lots of them but are now sold out again.

Certified boxes have been €50 to €89, not €200

But the problem isn't the profit.

The problem is the lack of honesty in the description. It's not made clear what these generic products lack and that they have not been tested (in the technical sense) at all for use in Ireland.

It's fine to offer a choice. This is not choice, but duping the ordinary shopper. But it's not actually a bargain at all for what it is. All generic products should clearly state that they are untested & not certified for Irish Market and what features they definitely lack.

Did you look at this? It clearly says in red. "Support mpeg2. Do not support mpeg4"

    yes.

the mpeg decoding is done in software,
just use VLC or Media player instead of the supplied software.

They probably know that a number of people won't bother to bring back partly compatible gear or MPEG2 boxes and televisions that won't work at all for Saorview or the Freeview HD channels from overspill. :(

Watty, you being an amateur radio operator have you concerns about the RF selectivity/immunity of cheap DTT receivers ?
Do you think some of them might be too susceptible to nearby 'strong signals' be it a nearby TETRA base station or nearby amateur 70cms transmissions (nearer to the UHF TV band than TETRA, so more easily picked up by TV aerials) causing breakup etc

Does Saorview's certification also test the RF performance of the tuner?

The biggest issue today is faulty and badly designed PSUs, that are actually illegal, jamming LW, MW, & SW and to an extent even weaker VHF stations up to 30m away.

There are laws. Comreg is not enforcing them and has NO mechanism for ordinary public to report interference to their TV or Radio.

The Digital Dividend is badly thought out. 4G/LTE Base stations will cause problems for mast amps, far more than Tetra. It won't provide rural broadband either. That's a lie.

The 4G/LTE handsets & modems will jam cable TV and cable Modems or in-house modulators for TV distribution in home or hotels.

The generation of RF interference and susceptibility to "out of band RF" is tested as part of CE mark.

Of course many generic receivers have faked CE marks. Saorview certified gear will have real CE marks.

It's a criminal offence to generate interference above a certain level. Wireless Telegraphy act and also EU EMC directives signed to Irish Law.
