Lost speeding fine

I have lost my speeding fine notification which I have four days left in which to pay.
Panic stricken, i telephoned the main office in Thurles to try to pay over the phone but was informed that they cannot accept payment by telephone, only issue a new notice. Because of the bank holiday, this will not get to me on time to pay within the 56 days. i offered to pay for express delivery but was told that they would not do that and that I would 'Just have to find the notice or go to court..." If I could find the notice, I wouldn't have needed to call the office in the first place - but the staff member I spoke to was not helpful at all. I asked if it could at least be logged that I tried to pay on time but was prevented from doing so by their system, but I do not have much faith in them.

I am terrified. Will I have to go to court, will it be in the newspapers and will I get a 'criminal' record?

I'd say you might have to go the court route alright but would doubt if you would be mentioned in the paper unless you live in a rural town and the paper is pretty small scale. And a speeding fine is not a criminal conviction

I have no experience with this, but maybe you could travel there in person and sort something out? Surely, they can print it out for you there and then.
Also, I don't suppose you can do it online? Maybe just get the "long number" at the top of the ticket somehow. I know that the Garda who stopped you can cancel and reissue the tickets in some cases, but I think they still need that number.

This is what I did in those circumstances.

I sent a cheque by Express Post for the amount of the fine.

I wrote a covering letter with details of the offence – date, place and car registration details.

This was accepted by the fines people.

Not being smart but you really need to find that letter. If you go to court and give that excuse the judge will have heard it a thousand times before and you face having 4 points on your licence.

You cannot blame the fixed penalty system just because you lost an important letter.
