My wifes car has packed up - 02 Avensis.
Cost to repair is approx €1500.
So rather than spend that on a car that is not even worth that much - with a 3 grand budget, what should I go for?

Interesting - do you have any experience with Mazda? I drove a Mazda 3 once but apart from that I don't know much about them, I suppose it could be a good thing that you don't hear complaints about them.

The petrol Mazda 6 is a very good and reliable car, they are also very nice to drive. The only thing to watch is rust on some of the earlier models.

Excellent choice car, very comfortable and reliable. Had mine for 8 months and never steered me wrong, only asked of new tyres and a service. The 1.8 is a thirsty engine, I averaged about 30MPG (10 L/100KM) doing city driving. Do NOT go for the diesel engine version, they're renound for problems. You will buy a good one cheap too (mine was a 2004 and I sold it for €2800). Looks good in red too don't you think? ;) Only sold mine to go for a diesel with my high mileage.

TIP: When looking at the pics, go for a model with the steering wheel buttons - generally means it has cruise control.
