What info will a death cert give me?

Found a death cert. Can't find any birth certs or baptismal certs for anyone in the family-just this one death cert. Will it tell me parents names and where born etc.? Thanks. Hesitant to buy it unless its going to give me something interesting. I found it on Familysearch.org but it only tells me year of death and estimated age at birth.

If it's an Irish death cert, it won't give you information on the parents or where the person was born.
It will tell you the 'Date & Place of Death', 'Name & Surname', "sex', 'Condition' (married, widowed, single), 'Age at last Birthday' (which can be days, months or weeks in the case of a young child) 'Rank, Profession or Occupation', 'Certified Cause of Death and Duration of Illness', 'Signature , Qualification and Residence of Informant', 'When Registered' and the 'Signature of Registrar'

Sometimes the Informant details can be useful, especially if the person died at home.

    Hope this helps,

Are you sure about this? I picked up a Death Cert of a recent death which did have the names of the parents including mother's maiden name, but not their places or dates or birth.

all depends on the dates... I think the new format is quite recent.

Older certs, certainly up to the 1960s contain just the details mentioned by VicWynne. The only time you may see a parent's name on older certs, is as informant on the death of a child.

(The online index on FamilySearch covers up to 1958)

It actually changed much more recently. Between the deaths of my maternal grandparents in 2007 and 2009, the later death recorded parents names, place of birth, date of birth, etc but all information was provided by the recorder of the death - who asked (for me!) what if the person did not know this information. She was told then it would be left blank.
