    Limerick Cardiac Unit
    1. James Reilly was presented with a petition last week to force through opening of the new multi million cardiac unit in the Limerick Regional Hospital.

    2. This would enable all patients with a heart problem after 5-clock to remain in Limerick and not be sent to Galway in an ambulance or Taxi. ( thats right taxi ).

    3. All that had to be done was an inspection from the HSA and the unit could be open. Thats right the same govenment body that were quick to shut a garage owner down because of a calander were in no rush to open a cardiac unit that will save lives.

    4. No problem James Reilly happily announced on the radio.
There was however one problem, our Minister for Health was not aware that the HSE had not done any rosters or hired staff to run our new multi million euro cardiac unit.

    5. Result, dying people are queing at an a&e/taxi rank to go to Galway which adds up to €54 million a year according to recent reports.

    6. Make sense of that Reilly

an ambulance or Taxi. ( thats right taxi ).
    [*]]

OK, originally an ambulance was merely a transportation vehicle, ie, a taxi, its sole purpose was to get patients to an aid station, hospital or inter ward in sprawling facilities.

Today and ambulance is a specialised MTSU, ie a mobile trauma surgical unit, as such it is manned by at least two advanced paramedics [almost doctors] and other advanced technicians as the shout requires.

As such the 'mere' transportation or taxiing of patients is the least economical function of such vehicles and their crews, and once accounts are added up, paying for a taxi is quite cheap in comparison, especially as one considers the numbers of units even available, hundreds of taxis versus a few MTSU's.

I see where you are coming from, but if someone presents to A&E with a cardiac issue do you think it is suitable to ship them off to Galway in a taxi without any medical supervision? There are a number of options available which would at least allow a certain level of medical supervision, not least by utilizing a private ambulance for the transport duty - as is standard across the country as it is.

There is a disconnect between 3 and 4. It is stated in 3 that the only problem was the lack of a HSA inspection. If I was a Minister and was told that on radio, I would certainly say that the HSA inspection would happen and I would make sure it would happen.

However, it seems this was not the case and that there is more to this than meets the eye.

Thanks for getting the point Sierra Oscar

the original use of an ambulance is not important, peoples lives are

It is not ok to put a heart patient in a Taxi with no medical supervision, economical or not

he was not told this on the radio, he was aware that a multi million euro unit was not in use

the basic point is that he neglected the people of Limerick through blind indifference took his sound bite and went along his merry way

As an insider, I would love to know where this skill mix standardisation exists? Indeed, if such staffing uniformity actually existed. It would have certainly reduced the numbers of DOA's/BID's I have encountered over the years. You also suggested that a paramedic is 'almost a doctor', doctor of what may I ask? Paramedics are well trained professionals, whose function is to provide point of contact, off site emergency interventions. With a goal to stabilising a patient and transferring them safely to a waiting specialist Medical/Nursing team. Are they well trained? Yes. Are they Doctors? No.

Funny that Limerick had no problem calling for the closure of acute services in Nenagh and Ennis, saying the patients would be better cared for in the bigger center at Limerick.

Kind of ironic that they are now campaigning to keep services at Limerick.

On the contrary, no one wanted Nenagh and Ennis closing, all this was going to do was put more pressure on an already overcrowded situation in Limerick. Did i really need to point this out to you? Unreal.

Who in Limerick said that?! Links please?!...All those closures have done is make the Regional even more over-crowed!

I appreciate the two links provided i hadn't seen anyone saying that! To be honest they may have been promised that the Regional would not be affected dramatically but it has and its a major problem. Nobody in Limerick (in the public) wanted to see Ennis/Nenagh or any hospital close as it puts lives at risk! I would be fuming if they closed down St.Johns in Limerick so i can only imagine how people in Ennis etc..feel!

Chiparus - can i remind you that this post was a direct attack on the officials in charge of cardiac care in Ireland, you are correct in everything you say but your motives are messed up, no one here wants cardiac units closed anwhere.

People having to travel from Nenagh to Limerick is as bad as people traveling from Limerick to Galway in my opinion and it also seems to be the opinion of the special one

    Are you clear on this

    Also Chiparus

This was a specialist cardiac unit that had not yet been opened so no one was looking to keep services open in Limerick, they were looking to get them opened, all articles and reports in relation to health care before this unit opens are irrelevant

but still i would not like to see any cardiac unit closed in any town
