    why do you have to have a sky sub to watch rte in ireland when they are FTA

    You don't, all channels are free see here if you want to view them http://www.aertv.ie/ get a google box and hook it up to the TV and you can watch pretty much anything you like without sky.

    They're not free to air on the satellites Sky broadcast from, for reasons that have been discussed to death here in the past.

    Just get a Saorview setup.

    You don't.
    You need an aerial to receive Saorview FTA ..... just as you needed an aerial to receive the analogue channels FTA.
