From someone with less than zero % knowledge of trading. Would it be worth my while to try and get involved in the trading game? Or is that number too small to make any real gains vs. the risk?

Which are you interested in, trading or investing ?

As a beginner to both My advise is use 5000 out of 20000, for trading or investing.

see how it goes, and you can buy preferred shares with the 15000 so that's a definite return on your investment.

Hold a portfolio of etf's, see how you go with them first.

most people cannot beat the market and you claim to have zero knowledge about it , seriously , you would be better putting a bet on a horse

buy an index fund and simply take the hits and gifts which the market sends your way , most fund managers never beat theese index funds over a long period
