Hi.. In also planning to apper in the registration exam this year but I've no idea about the past papers. I would appreciate if you will get in touch and give an idea of how are you preparing for part 1 ie basic sciences and the clinical exam. Also, do you have any idea about the exact dates of exam?

I've been preparing from my undergrad text books and also from the guideline for ORE. Just didn't have any precise I formation abt the Irish dental council. Also I know the months of the exam but not a more specific time frame. So no need to be sarcastic. Thanks

i'm not being sarcastic, just living in the real world!
nearly all newly graduated dentists from irish universities have emigrated due to the poor job prospects. a fair proportion who were working for other dentists have taken the brunt of the recession as the owners make sure they've a full book for themselves.

a few years back when demand was greater than supply, opportunities existed. most patients now want to see 'the boss' and whether we like it or not this is especially so if the associate dentist is not irish. i'm not being racist just being honest.

    best of luck to you.

    futuredentist & Mehwish,

Contact the registration agency for past exam papers. I'm not a dentist and unfortunately I don't know any dentist.
When you set up in Ireland, some advice:

    • Irish people currently go abroad for Dental treatment - keep a small one-to-one surgery that enables you to eliminate business partnerships/extra costs and thus enable affordable rates,
    • Advertise on Gumtree and other "casual" advertisements to attract business and retain a level business that gives you time off without a 'fixed' working hour schedule.

1- However, there remains the minor detail of Tax& Revenue:confused:
2- Larger surgeries generally have smaller running costs, also known as economies of scale. With the Irish surgeries scheduled to implement a central decontamination room, a la the UKs' HTM 01-05, in the next few years, this will become even more relevant.
3- Your marketing depends on what client base you are targeting- most business' rely on word of mouth. If you plan to be super-flexible, expect calls at 9pm on a Friday night, or 10am on a Sunday morning....both calls that our (Irish-based, Irish-run, Irish-cost, Irish-tax paying, Irish-employing) surgery answered & saw last weekend;)

    Op, don't do this.....

Regarding the exam, most dentists posting here have gone through the Irish/uk system so really know nothing about these exams.... As far as I am aware, the dental facility of the royal college of surgeons Ireland run the statutory exam for foreign grads to gain entry into our system. This then allows registration with the Irish dental council... I may be wrong but that's all I know.....

Hi just wondering if you took the exams in the end and if you were able to find past exam papers? My gf is a non-EU citizen and is thinking of taking the exams. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Hi there,

After being searching all the forums for weeks, I could finally this one on boards.ie . I was looking for someone who could help me regarding the Irish dental exam for non-EU dentists. I would like to take the exam and I was trying to contact Irish dental council to get some information, but they were not really helpful and responsive. I would highly appreciate if you could answer below questions :
    1)      As one the requirements I need to have 3 continues years of practical experience in the past 5 years in which I have that, but there is a gap of 11 months in between where I was preparing myself for the board exam in Japan. It took me a year in order to complete the board exam, do you think this gap will stop me of doing the am in Ireland?
    2)      Have you done the exam and how it looks like in term of the difficulties ? any recommendations for preparation?
    3)      Any study materials or books you can suggest me to obtain in order to get prepared for the exam
    4)      Can I practice as dentist in Ireland (with temporary registration) while I get prepared for the exam as it will take me almost a year to be out of practice.
    5)      Can I work as dental nurse while I am preparing myself for the exam?
Please kindly respond to my questions as I am frustrated after being sending 10 emails to the Irish dental council and no one had replied.
    Your kindness is highly appreciated
    Maggei
