You can't unless you have a UK address (i.e. are resident there). Your best bet is to exchange for an Irish one.

I have a UK license too and asked about getting a new one was told the same that I needed a UK address. They have a full section on the website. Iv been stopped here and told I cant use it but as far as im concerned it's valid in Europe so I haven't changed it. Have you had this experience ?

As long as the licence is valid, you can drive here on it. When it expires (the card part) not the licence, then you have to renew the card, as it's only valid for 10 years. That's where the problems arise. UK licences are valid until the day before your 70th birthday.

Yes ive been through a few checkpoints before:
one time i was told that im obliged (whatever that means) to get an irish one if im living here
Second time i was told that theyll soon be linking with the UK system so ya wont be able to get away with that for much longer. (with a cheeky smile off the guard)

The only real reason i dont want an irish one is because i dont like the ratty irish one (+ its cheaper). dont care about the penalty points (dont ever get them)

mine expired last month and I got a new UK one the photo carded ones, used my parents address in the Uk for them to send it on to -took about 10 days in total, by law you should get an irish one if driving over here for more than 6 months but I didnt want to -not really sure as to why either

The Irish CC type licences will be available in January.

That's not true. You can drive on an EU license in Ireland until it expires or it gets older than 10 years (max. time of a driving license being valid in Ireland). Then you have to exchange it for an Irish one.

This is true. It's amazing how many Gards are not aware of this and try to tell you to exchange the licence.
