Someone getting interviewed on RTE Radio "Drive Time" about the so called Digital Dividend now that Analogue TV is turned off.

"3g is about 10Mbps and 4G will be about 50Mbps"

He lives on a different plane of reality. That's fantasy. I've never had more than 2Mbps 3G and in the 5MHz channels (same size as 3G) and larger cells (800MHz vs 2100MHz of 3G) the speed will be similar. It will be maybe twice as good as 3G if your 3G speed would have been 0.12 to 0.25M bps due to number of users.

Less than 5% of users can get 10Mbps 3G. Less than 5% of users would get 50 Mbps 4G on 20MHz channels. But the "Digital Dividend" is too small for that (2500MHz would allow it). The top speed on 800MHz Digital Dividend due to Comreg's plan for a single channels being 5 MHz is about the SAME as 3G. Not x5 faster.

When will RTE start interviewing experts instead of people seduced by Press Releases?

Sad to hear it's John Kennedy of Silicon Republic.

He's having trouble with bits and bytes again. And touting Apple devices (iPhone 5 and iPad) that are incompatible with most of the digital dividend spectrum.

    I've gotten a max of 5MB on 3g....normally 1-2MB though,

1 to 2Mbps is highly probable according to analysis.

    http://www.radioway.info/comparewireless/

On 5MHz LTE the speed will be the same, but twice as good as 3G when very congested.

On 20MHz LTE the speed is x4

On Dual channel 3G HSPA+ (perhaps less than 10% of time / locations) the speed is x2

But on all Mobile there is NO congestion/contention control possible other than low caps. If 10+ people near each other wanting to use it for video, maybe 5 might get workable performance.

Think of how well WiFi works for one person versus a classroom.

If Pricing realistic (not voice subsidised), cap low and availability of Broadband is good then Mobile for people that need mobile can be x2 to x4 better!
