I'm just gonna check and see if there is anyone who wants to get rid of some competition wheels of the tubular kind? I'm looking for something between 20mm and 50mm in rim depth. I have money to spend, and would like to see what is available. My budget is fairly flexible, but probably stops at 800. Cheers.

I have a pair of Easton ec90 aero carbon wheels. They are 56mm carbon tubulars with the later/updated R4SL hubs - ceramic cartridge bearings, UD carbon rims and 1330 grams.

They retail at Stg1,600 and USD2,100. They are in perfect condition and include a new rear continental tub and a Zipp tangente front tub. Both holding air.

They have been used very little.

    How old are they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,929 ✭✭✭letape

They are two years old; but very rarely used

Yes, you've said, and I believe you.

    Are they these?

Yes - the same model as pictured. The 2011 and 2012 models had different decals, but are otherwise identical.

I know, but they devalue just the same unfortunately ;). Initial price?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,929 ✭✭✭letape

I'd sell them for 850 as are with the tubs. They have a campag freehub so if you are using Shimano I would make some allowance for the cost of a replacement freehub.

    That's a devaluation of over 50%!

I don't want the bother of having to change the hub. Sorry, and that's really at the upper end of my budget. Not good for my nerves! :D Perhaps I'll see what else is around and keep you in mind. :)

No problem - I should say that swapping the freehub is a 5 min job - its not changing the hub!!

Good luck with your search :)

    Hi,

I have a set of Dura Ace 7850 50mm tubular wheels for sale similar to these:

    http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/components/wheel-sets/product/review-shimano-dura-ace-wh-7850-tubular-wheelset-10-37811

They are 3 years old but only used for some races and still perfectly smooth and straight.

    Are you interested?

I have a set of Fuerte Bici 50mm Carbon Tubulars if you are interested. They are 18mths old and are in perfect condition. The rear was serviced about 2 months ago. 2 Continental Sprinter tubs on them, the front has only 300km in it and the back has only 16k on it. I can put on a DA 10 speed cassette on also, used but with plenty of life in it.

Fancy swapping those Easton's for a pair of Fulcrum Racing Light Clinchers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 823 ✭✭✭columbus_66

    Hi Caoimh,

Here's some pics, they are in great condition, carbon rims, still running true, and bearings perfect. A few scratches on the stickers from putting wheels in car boots but only cosmetic.

    Hi,
If the OP has no interest in these wheels, I might be interested. What kind of money are you looking for them.
    Thanks

Was looking for something around the €550

Was looking for something around the €550[/QUO

550 is too much for me, they are under 500e(400 sterling) new, now I know you are including 2 tyres and a cassette but they are 18 months old which means they have 2 seasons in them. Thanks anyway.

They havnt been raced, just a few of the An Post cycles. Getting rid cause of the tubulars and the fear of getting punctures! Great wheelset, would swop for clinchers if I could! Make me a offer!
Sorry to the OP for hijacking

My humble opinion on wheels is that they (including tyres) are more important than any other aspect of equipment inluding the frame. From my only wheel related experience, I found that when comparing wheels, brand new "lower end" wheels were better than second hand "higher level" wheels. They run more freely mainly due to a wear fee hub.
So if you want my advice (which you may not) I suggest a brand new pair of Mavic Ksyrium SL (or similar) for around €800. I see no point in aero wheels unless you do more TT's than open races. If you are more likely to do non TT events then the lighter, stiffer (non aero) wheels are more appropriate.
Would love to hear a more experienced cyclists opinion on this as it's just about the only aspect of the bike I feel strongly about!

Damn right about aero wheels, no need for them in a country like Ireland. Lively to ride around the continent but in my house here right now I have 3 broken zipp 404's. Says a lot for zipp and no different from other deep rims, roads in Ireland being what they are.

What you say about bad wheels better than going wheels that are used however is certainly untrue. Riding r sys wheels at the moment. Replacing the bearings for ceramic ones back and front only costs 15e and only has to be done every 20'000km or so. Compared to wheels like r500 which are muck, there is no comparison

By the way have tubular campagnolo shamal shimano f hub at the moment. Not sure if they are the ultra model or not but definitely black, few years old, used 150km. Tubs included 350e. Will have to check model though

I ended up running away from Tubulars and bought a nice set of Mavic Cosmic Carbone SRs. It was a stretch, but hopefully I'll be happy with them :).

Second hand or new? Fine bloody wheel! You probably went over budget did you?

    Well wear anyway...

Well the comparison I was specifically thinking of was between 2 mavics one is just one grade up from the other. To be fair, I didn't ride the new ones much, but it just felt less resistive somehow.

I likes me bit of brand new....mainly because this year I bought my first ever new bike and wheels...up til then I had second hand only.

A small bit of a stretch--nothing huge. Jedi-sports sell them pretty cheaply!
