Oil in the Water system. How much to fix?

    I have a 1.4l Peugeot 307.

Oil has been leaking into the coolant system for a while. My mechanic cleaned out the coolant tank on my last service and said keep an eye on it as probable head gasket issue.

Anyway, the car engine was overheating at the weekend. I pulled in, opened coolant tank to find it full of brown sludgy stuff. Scooped out as much as I could and filled it back up with water, but couldn't get it home as it was still overheating.
So I had it towed to a local recovery yard and its stranded down the country.

The guy who recovered it is quoting me €650 to have head gasket skimmed, water pump and timing belt replaced, and radiator flushed out.

Does this sound like whats needed/reasonable?

Ur mechanic should of told you not to drive the thing. I would think the price ur being quoted is cheap enough im open to correction tho.

Well it wasn't that much oil in the water tank, at the service a year ago. My Mechanics thinking was it could be a small leak.

Might go with that mechanics price. My only fear is the he finds more problems and ups the price.

I had the same problem in my old car and it was the head gasket gone so it wasnt worth the price of repair. I think he will find more problems any issue with oil and water mixing in the engine is not good and the sludge is the clue that all is not well.

Head gaskets leaking oil on them is a common issue though in our experience it usually leaks straight out onto the ground rather than into the coolant. Based on a few we have done recently €650 sounds about right with a new timing belt kit and water pump.
