Probably been done before but anyone know a good line of old fashioned Springers?

Look at the dogs in this & tell me trialling hasn't shrunk the breed! 1.10 onwards shows some fine lumps of dogs

I think u need to see my springer. But I agree with you I can not get a bitch to suit him at all

My bitch is as close to the old type springer as i have seen for a good while, she is only 10months and already pounding through cover, she is bigger already than my neighbors 4 year old dog. im delighted with her so far, parents where big square springers aswell i spent ages looking for the right type of build

like all good dogs something always goes wrong and the dam of my bitch was put down after getting a tip from a car a few months ago

The breed has definitely got smaller! we always kept springers at home! 2 of my cousins recently got 2 pups, male and female (from different litters) both coming on the 1 yr mark and are much smaller then anything we have had before!!

Does a bigger dog mean a better dog?

Why are lads so concerned with how there dog looks? If he/she's healthy and hunts well what difference does it make what size she is?..

main reason i want a bigger dog is for retrieving, bigger mouth etc makes it easier to carry rabbits, duck in water etc i also prefer the look of the stronger type

i posted a thread here some time ago, asking about different types of springers,as my own bitch is an old type big heavy set springer and i havnt come across a springer matching her type il try get a pic up of her soon,im breeding her at the end of season when she comes into heat, all things goin well, but i have noticed alot of springers are very small and very light built, i read in some magazine a while ago that in the trialling field, they are now looking to breed bitchs with ordinary rough shooting dogs because of pure and close breeding of to many ftch dogs down thru the years making the dogs lighter built, now i stand corrected on that, but from what i ve seen springers are getting smaller ah if they get any smaller ,the paris hiltons and what nots will have them in there handbags the nxt big fashion item toy springers!!!!:D:D:D mhmhmmmh now theres a market;)

Let's not descend unto that conversation again!
It's not the point of the thread.

I always liked the old style heavy boned springer. Not a fan of the new cocker sized ones.
We used have a springer one time that would kill foxes the terriers would bolt. An animal he was. The same fella used let pheasants pick out if his bowl yet come out with the gun & there wasn't a pheasant safe in any cover.

I like a bulldozer with muscle & power as that's the type of dog I need to hunt the cover we have here.

It's all personal taste & if happy with the small flashy dogs then best of luck to you. I feel it's almost a new breed now & I have a preference for the old.

That's all so rather than debate that story all over again I'd rather lads point me in the direction of the type of dog I'm after...

i know they say talk is cheap but I think I might have the kind of dog you talk about !.. Hes a big old fashioned type springer with a strong square head. An animal of a dog in cover if there's something around he wont stop til he finds it. I take no credit for having him like this though ! I was just lucky enough to be given a present of the dog by a friend of my fathers and with very little work he became an ideal rough shooting dog. His temperament is like none I've seen before though .. No interest in people or balls. Just wants to hunt, hunt, hunt! Its funny you should say that about your springer killing foxes epointer, because towards the end of last season this fella pinned a vixen by the throat in thick cover and killed her! I have never heard of it before til now ! I would be hoping to breed from this boy in the future with another big dog to try and get a line of big springers going. I will try and post some pics of him later .

Ya I agree - when i was younger my Dad and his brothers always had big strong springers!! I much prefer them to the newer slim line version!! I like a big strong dog too!!

uncle has two springers that we hunt over first is and old style bitch that came from english stock she is 6 now second is an irish breed dog he was pick of the litter but the old bitch is massive compared to him its amazing to see the size difference in the the same breed
im hoping to get a springer myself soon and i think i would prefer the old type dog just for the look of them
    sotg

i myself prefer the bigger strong boned head like a bullock type springer and a friend has the dog, this is him 35kg+, bad pic tho, we wanted to get him bred so the bitch is of the average build but very good to burst cover and retrieve, the dog will stay going all day 9 in morning till dark.land and water. have a nice dog pup off him.

I have two nice big bitches, a mother and daughter, they come down the Blackwood Moss line(Sire and GrandSire respectively) who was a field trial champion some years ago and by all accounts he was a big dog. They are both big strong, longish kinda dogs, both very strong retirevers. I don't think you can generalise about trial dogs, as a breeder I can tell you that pups from the same litter can grow up all shapes and sizes. Trialers like to go for dogs with a lot of white for 'flash' apparantly when they work. For me size and shape is important but comes second to whats between the ears.
