Samsung LE32D450 LCD - Not picking up Saorview...

I am having trouble setting up the Samsung LE32D450 LCD with Saorview for my parents. ( They are living just outside Drogheda.)

They bought the TV approx a year ago in the local Briscoes store (expert electrical). The TV is listed as being equipped with the necessary tuner on the Saorview website - Link

The problem - I go through the auto-tuning steps in the menu for 'air' only channels. (the other option is cable, but that is for picking up analogue stations). It goes through the process fairly quickly and picks up the following: 12 TV stations and 14 radio stations.

So all looking good at this stage... however; The TV stations it picks up are BBC 1 NI, BBC 2 NI, BBC3, BBC News, BBC Parliament, CBeebies.... etc. So no Irish stations and no UTV or Channel 4 for that matter.

FWIW, using the analogue arial, they pick up BBC1 NI, BBC2 NI, UTV, C4, Rte 1 and 2, TV3 and TG4 without any issues - Although the signal on a couple of the stations is not great.

    Any ideas?

Something else that might be worth nothing:

They have Sky+HD installed and is connected into the back of the TV through a HDMI cable... So why the need for Saorview? Well, they are using the same box to provide Sky+ functionality to another room using a magic eye - So if the box is being used in the other room, they are left with no other option but to watch the same channel now that Saorview is up and running from tomorrow.

Would the TV being linked to a Satellite dish (indirectly) have anything to do with the TV picking up BBC stations and not the Irish ones? (I think this tv also has a MPEG 2 tuner as well as MPEG 4)...

There is no such thing as an analogue aerial, nor a digital aeriel - only UHF aerials (except for a few VHF aerials in the ROI).

What aerial model do you use ? How is it mounted? -Vertical or Horizontal ? pointing in which direction?

Which UHF channels are used for the analogue channels? (you got a little over 5 hours to check)

Try to tune digital BBC 1 NI, select the info page (press menu/tools/?). Check the UHF channel used and while you are there check the signal quality.

    Lars :)

The SKY box may or may not be part of your problem - I will however leave the above post.

If you get the 4 Irish analogue channels with an aerial you should get the Saorview channels.

Have you checked for the Saorview channels from channel no. 800 upwards? What country was selected when the TV was first setup?

It has MPEG4 hardware which is backwards compatible with MPEG2. The Tv is fine.

Its the tuning process that you are not following correctly. When you go and pick air, 2 options below that is "Manual", when you go into Manual pick "Digital" and pick ch53 and then down to scan. It will add the Saorview Mux.

The channel will be in the 800s which you can renumber to 1,2 etc.

(By the way you will need to redo this in a weeks time as your local Saorview transmitter is moving to Ch52) So dont be alarmed when they disappear in early November.

Sorry for the late replies. I tried this and it picks up no additional channels. Just says that no channels are found.

The SKY box may or may not be part of your problem - I will however leave the above post.

I ruled out the Sky box conflict; that is not causing any issues. I tried to check the signal strength on the Samsung TV but I dont see any option for that on the menu/control...

Here is the strange thing. After the switchoff this morning, I went into autotune again and more channels were added:

I now get all of the BBC channels, Channel 4 and +1, Utv and +1, Channel 5, E4, More 4 etc. I think its about 22 channels in total. However, I am still not picking up any of the Irish channels...

I get the feeling it may be to do with the direction the aerial is facing - However, that raises another question: Lets say I move the aerial and I am now able to pick up all the Saorview channels... Will that result in me losing all of the UK channels or is it possible in theory to combine both?

    Any advice appreciated...

Have you tried doing a MANUAL STORE as previously advised??

You can check signal strength through holding down info button maybe??
or else through menu and down to the bottom of list and into heading for signal.
it should tell you the channel number, strength and quality.

Extra channels-you are just getting the additional uk freeview channels now.
I dont know why you wouldnt get the saorview channels. Unless it depends on the aerial type.

Check to see what country you have chosen in the channel menu. Did you try the ch 53 manual tuning as previously advised? That is saorview.
Try auto tuning without aerial connected, then first try a manual retune for channel 53.
This channel is supposed to be changing though i think it is changing to channel 52 sometime after today??

See if you get saorview then. give some feedback.
Afterwards you could do an autostore for the other channels(uk freeview).

I removed the aerial and did a auto retune which removed all stored channels. I then plugged it back in, did an Auto tune and it is now picking up all the channels :)

So we now have all the Irish and UK channels without having to buy another box. Thanks for the advice.

have similar model no tv le32b450.
my problem is that the tv still shows the analog picture (now snow). i have to press the number on the remote for a second time to get it to change to the digital signal.
Can i get rid of the analog signal fully so the prob above does not occur?
One slight problem though ( tv is in my room and i can receive the signal from the main sky box in the house however this seems to be coming thru to my room on the analog system.
So in short i need to get rid of the analog signal but still be able to receive the sky signal,,,
    Can anyone help me out????

Have you done an analogue and digital auto scan from within the menu, should get rid of the old analogue channels but the Sky feed will stored as an analogue channel. Your TV's manual will describe how you do it.

I dont think you can get rid of the analogue signal. Anyway you would still need it for the sky magic eye is it?
you can try retuning for analogue to lose any historic named stations and you should only have one analogue station left-your sky.
pressing the same number button on your remote just switches between the analogue and digital on your tv.

maybe i dont understand what exactly you are trying to get rid of though, or why..? :)

    oops!
well i now see you were already told this...so i dont think you can get rid of having an option for analogue on your tv. is there a dtv button on your remote? or even using the guide or list button to select what channel you want to watch?
