Magnaclean and thermostats

Someone came to look at our boiler and recommended strongly that we get a thing called a Magnaclean, which apparently sucks all the little bits of metal out of the circulating water; you take it out and clean the filter every couple of months.

    Advice?

They also talked about thermostats - now, I had thermostats before and they were a curse, forever sticking, which inevitably meant I had to call out the plumber; he showed me how to take the yoke apart and put a bradawl in it and give it a light welt with a hammer to unstick the part that was stuck, but never once did I succeed in this. Have they changed? Are new modern thermostats different?
