    Hi,
I am currently doing a level 5 fetac in nursing studies and am just wondering if anyone knows any colleges in England that do not require maths? or any that you do not need higher then a C3 as Im not sure if I will be able to even pass maths!. I do not want to be left with any options next year simply because I failed maths so received no offers :(
    Thank You

I don't know what the requirements are for Nursing, I suggest you talk to the career guidance person in your college. It is unlikely that the PLC college would have taken you on for the course if they thought you would not be able to progress.

However think of this, you are going to need reasonable numeracy to be a nurse, for all sorts of reasons from dealing with medications to using complex equipment. Colleges don't decide you need maths in an effort to be difficult, they are aware that maths will come into the course and there is no point taking someone on and training them, only for them to have problems because they cannot cope with the maths.

I am not trying to put you off, and you do need to talk to the CG person, but maybe think in terms of improving your maths by doing some extra study?

    Hi Joan,

I agree with the other commentator, maths is rather important accross the board. IMO critical in theatre, peads, a&e & midwifery. But I don't want to frighten you as my one bit of advice is don't be scared of maths, I've found it's the thought of it rather than the practical implementation of it that is scary (trust me I know this 1st hand!!)

So you're thinking of going to the uk to study?

All the colleges are affiliated to a university and will generally require evidence of a competency in maths, but this doesn't necessarily mean a secondary school qual.

You say that you are doing a fetac in nursing - surely there has to be a maths component to this? - if so promote this fact.

Some colleges offer aptitude tests (esp for mature students) to cover the necessary competences. But since it went to tertiary ed all of these tests are different depending on the uni you are applying to. They used to be standard one time - there was a particular name for this test - I can't remember at the mo, there was a couple in my cohort that came in that way.

    Anyway, I digress....sorry.

Check with the uni's and don't lose hope.

One last note - check with the NMC (nursing and midwifery council) with their advice.

    Good luck

    Hi!

I have looked into this in great detail as I am doing a nursing studies PLC also...

For the UK you do need a C3 Ordinary Level Minimum the colleges got strict on that last year as in the past they accepted a load of irish people who couldn't do math...

Its annoying but when you will be working with patients and calculating dosages and IV fluid distribution you cant be too careful...

Im in a similar boat to you. I can do quick sums in my head and add things up no problem. Its when it comes to writing out big long formulae and structred maths that I cannot progress for the life of me.
Feels a bit unfair but we have to deal with it I guess. Its probably hindered me until Im a mature student.

Would you consider Maths grinds, or maybe one of your class mates might help you out a little? Have a chat with your maths teacher if you're finding it hard to understand.

Anybody know educational qualifications to become a hospital porter or to work as part of an ambulance crew.

Hospital porter - I presume none, or at least very minimal. Probably healthcare assistant would help.

Ambulance crew - Registered Paramedic, 2-4 year degree, currently no degrees like that in Ireland unless the HSE decide to recruit. Some relevant experience, C1 and D1 licence, Physically fit, decent enough education, and thats before you get into training!

UK have plenty of paramedic degree's, easier to get into but still similar requirements. Getting a job with an ambulance service is hard work and sparse in Ireland.
