    Hi,

We are planning our wedding next year and are looking for an alternative venue in Dublin. We want to move away from the typical hotel reception, and are looking for either an outdoor space, barn, coachhouse or stables convertion. Something indie, gothic, or hippy.

the only places that spring to mind as being somewhat different are the pillar room in the rotunda, Tailor's hall in Chrstchurch and the vaults in Christchurch cathedral. Possibly the Angler's rest also for that vintage/bohemian look and feel.

Boutique camping in castletown geoghagan near mullingar could be great if you're willomh to travel the hour outside Dublin. It has a converted barn, an unconsercated chapel, a lake and big BBQ area. Guests can stay in yurts which are very cool but I think there are also bnbs and maybe a hotel nearby if that's not for everyone. Very different, laid back feel to the place! Considering it as an option ourselves if anyone has any feedback, that would be great??

We got married in Tailor's Hall recently - an old style banqueting hall, very awesome - http://www.antaisce.org/tailorshall/TailorsHall.aspx

We just got married here very recently, and it was utterly awesome. We didn't want anything by way of a traditional wedding, we were just looking for a venue where we could kick back for a couple of days with family and friends and have a party. The venue really does provide something for everyone, it ticked every box. What really makes the venue though are all the folk who work there, really couldn't have gone more out of their way to make sure that every single guest felt very looked after. We used the recommended caterer, couldn't say enough good things about her- PM me if you'd like further details

Yikes, the cost of the rental of those things for our numbers would swallow my entire wedding budget.

Had a 'shed wedding' in Dublin earlier this year, found out that even though there is loads of inspiration on the internet its still quite a new concept in Ireland.
Our theme was sea / beach/ outdoor & no hotels! After thinking about all the usual choices, most of which have already been mentioned here, we started to look for a proper rustic style shed along the coast in Dublin.
You soon realise that for alternative venue to work you still need: a bar/ kitchen for the catering & good toilet facilities! Which made us think about venues which already exist but having the reception in a space which wouldnt normally be used for weddings - if that makes sense. For us, we're both members of a sailing club & had said early on that we didnt want wedding in the club house....but, there was a big ugly shed full of boats & junk out the back which was much more what I had in mind!
We cleaned out the shed, power washed for days, painted, hung lights & bunting, hired furniture & a dance floor & were good to go! So many of our friends helped out & we couldnt have done it without them.
Have no particular venue to suggest to you, but just to say in my opinion 'different' is hard to find but worth it if you want something that really represnts you both as a couple!

KittyMittens, if that was in Clontarf Yacht Club, I heard about your wedding from a friend of one of your guests who was very impressed with it. :)

Hi Sleepy, yes that was it! Had the ceremony on Dollymount, very lucky with the weather!

    sounds like a wonderful wedding!

OP, have you checked out http://boutiquecamping.ie/weddings-events/? thought the yurts looks similar to the MagnaKata. Dunno what prices would be like, judging from the accommodation section, may not be cheap though.

We have fallen in love with the yurts as we would love to have our wedding at home.
I did up a quick quote myself from their price list and it was coming in at about 7K for 100 guests.

Also are there any law preventing couples from getting married or having a reception in a public place, like a park or beach?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,301 ✭✭✭Gatica

yes, as long as you can find a minister willing to marry you there.

Do you mean, yes there are laws or yes we can get married at Sandcove beach or Killiney Hill?

Yes. A legal marriage has to be conducted in a building or structure, and may not take place in an open public space. Check out the requirements on the HSE website. You can of course marry legally and have a symbolic ceremony in a place of your choosing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,301 ✭✭✭Gatica

sorry I meant yes you can marry where you want, but I see now from your question that it made no sense to say yes.
no, there are no laws that I'm aware of preventing you from marrying anywhere public. Having a reception in a public place though I'd imagine would come under same laws as any other event. The council may have some objections to crowds gathering and possibly drinking in a public place that belongs to, ...well, the public.
