Im looking at changing runflats to standards on an BMW E60, what options do i have for getting a spare? I read that BMW do a kit but the cost seemed high - what other wheels will fit the E60, would a scrap dealer sell me on old spare from something else? Anyone done this that can offer advice?

buy a 12v car pump from ebay and a can of tyre weld.

    Interesting,

What type of puncture would this not work on? tear in tyre maybe?
Is it easy to properly repair the tyre after using this stuff?
What about NCT? Do they care if you have no spare and no runflats?

    +1

Ask yourself how many times have you actually had to change a tyre at the side of the road?

Get insurance with roadside assist. People get help getting their tyres changed all the time. In the unlikely event it happens to you, you'll just be embarrassed for an hour.

it doesn't wreck the tyre but they might charge you a few quid extra for cleaning it out.
It wont work on a tear - only an ordinary puncture.
I don't think its an issue but if it is throw an old wheel in the boot on NCT day.

NCT is about safety - not about every motoring scenario you could possibly encounter.

MrsDerps car has no spare and no pump. Just a can of goo, which is probably solid inside.

Finding a space saver spare wheel for an E60 will prove difficult as they are in short supply. Main dealer charges about €350 for a spare wheel kit for the E60. You could keep an eye out on the BMW forums for a single alloy wheel and throw it in the boot but they do take up alot of space if you use the boot frequently. Tyre weld and air compressor are grand if you get a regular puncture in the tyre thread but if it is on the side wall then they will be useless. So either have roadside recovery or carry a spare.

BTW a spare wheel is not a requirement of the NCT but if one is present in the car at the time of then test then it will be examined as part of the test.

Do any of those 12v pumps actually work?
I tried one cheap from Lidl, and more expensive one hooked up with jumpstarter.
The first one could not reach correct pressure, and the other one took looong time to pump the wheel(we are talking about an hour or so...).

I'm fairly sure that the x3 spare is the same so maybe broadens the options a bit
