    Hi,
can anyone recommend a nice romantic/cosy hotel for a young couple (we're both 24). The location should hopefully be an hour or two from dublin and in a town or city centre so we can go for a few drinks.

I was looking at the rivercourt hotel in kilkenny city. Anyone know if this would be any use?

You forgot to say 'no stag or hen parties' so I'd avoid KK at weekends if I was you. Try the Radisson in Athlone, you can walk to the Olive Grove restaurant beside the bridge and then have a drink either across the river (Shannon) behind the castle in Sean's Bar or right beside the Olive Grove restaurant there is a very nice pub called Gertie Browne's.

ha thanks but I don't think id mind the stags or hens. We're both young and I wouldn't imagine they'd be too much of an inconvenience?

If you're a heavy sleeper you shouldn't have any problems.

The Rivercourt is a beautiful hotel. If it's a nice day you can sit out on the terrace and have a few drinks. Definitely recommend it. Right in the middle of town as well.

What about the Headfort Arms Hotel in Kells ? its a small family run Hotel, it has the Keltic pub next door, the Vanilla Pod restuarant and a night club on a Saturday night.
Small town with lots of History, the hotel is over 100 years old.
The 109 bus stops right outside the door or if you are driving its hassle free with the M3 motorway bring you right there. Less than an hour from Dublin.

Athlone is a great spot, and while I've never been in any of the hotels there, the Sheraton and Athlone Springs are supposed to be nice!

Pavarotti is a nice Italian for dinner, you can bring your own wine too! Also heard great things about Kin Khao for Thai.
Bar wise, The Snug & Sean's Bar are great - and then party the night away in Karma club, which is fab!

See my post above :) All those places are within 7-8 mins walk from Sheraton, think Karma's even closer!

    enjoy :)

Athone or Kilkenny .........ermmmm, Kilkenny's a much better destination for a weekend break, good places to eat etc.

I recommend Athlone, despite my earlier reservations. I was there at Christmas for a few days and really enjoyed it. I recommend the Thai restaurant as well as the Olive Grove. I wouldn't recommend the Sheraton, and I wouldn't bother going to Glasson.

[EDIT] Just saw you booked the Sheraton. It's fine, it's just not up to usual Sheraton standards and the whole complex is a tasteless celtic tiger monstrosity. That's my opinion though an plenty will enjoy it.[/EDIT]

+1 on Olive Grove and Gertie Browne's.
Olive Grove normally has live shows -- check out who's playing when (I know Jack L and Sharon Shannon are playing soon). The venue is intimate and romantic overlooking the river.
